I'm running about 20% Copper here in Fremont, CA (SF Bay Area) since I started getting boxes about six months ago.
Broken down more specifically, in addition to about 10 dimes and two fake plastic pennies, five 2-Euro-Cents, and various other foreign coins, I've gotten:
Penny Type Count "1959 D " 230 1959 Plain 34 "1960 D " 292 1960 Plain 31 "1961 D " 275 1961 Plain 43 "1962 D " 336 1962 Plain 40 "1963 D " 395 1963 Plain 51 "1964 D " 829 1964 Plain 230 1965 Plain 231 1966 Plain 349 1967 Plain 521 "1968 D " 585 1968 Plain 77 "1968 S " 190 "1969 D " 496 1969 Plain 72 "1969 S " 449 "1970 D " 316 1970 Plain 106 "1970 S " 464 "1971 D " 381 1971 Plain 104 "1971 S " 431 "1972 D " 527 1972 Plain 180 "1972 S " 355 "1973 D " 881 1973 Plain 205 "1973 S " 348 "1974 D " 1499 1974 Plain 242 "1974 S " 218 "1975 D " 1554 1975 Plain 315 "1976 D " 1988 1976 Plain 239 "1977 D " 1843 1977 Plain 237 "1978 D " 1077 1978 Plain 740 "1979 D " 1191 1979 Plain 1348 "1980 D " 1089 1980 Plain 2476 "1981 D " 1269 1981 Plain 2018 1982 D Lg Cu 810 1982 Plain Lg Cu 468 1982 Plain Sm Cu 30 "Culls " 1700 "Wheat " 583 ----------------------- Cu Subtotal 32988 ----------------------- "Canada " 184 1982 D Sm Zn 72 1982 Plain Sm Zn 27 "Total " 33271

Howdy Neighbor!
Welcome to the forum swimmingly. You are about 20 miles from me. Your percentages are exactly what I have been getting. Looks like you are getting a good number of wheat cents.
How do you dispose of your zincs?
Have you considered going to the Fremont Coin Club? They meet every 2nd and 4th Tuesday at 7 PM at the Elks Lodge on Farwell. |
If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

Howdy, I'm Dan ... yes, I attended for the first time at the last meeting held by the Fremont Coin Club -- sat in the front row, and had a good time. Were you there? I understand they're having hot dogs at 6:30 this Thursday, so I may take my whole family, and save on dinner expenses :)
I did join, so hopefully they won't evict me for being exploitative, but my sons (ages 11 & 9) are dabbling in coin collecting, and who knows but that they may want to join, too. I'm pretty sure my wife will want to attend too, but with a hidden agenda of reining in my spending at the auction. |

| Welcome to the board Swimmingly, You sorted according to mint and year, WOW, that was a lot of work. Those are interesting numbers it looks like some of those P mint years with the lower numbers might be worth rolling up an setting aside. |

I was there.. I usually arrive late because of the day job. I showed a low grade $5 Indian in the show and tell. Better come on Tuesday instead of Thursday.. there won't be any hotdogs left by Thursday. Yes, bring the entire family. It is a very family oriented club. I am a life member.. have been a member since 1975.
Maybe next month you can come to the Livermore Valley Coin Club. Don't bring your wife to that one though.. the auction is much better.. with about 200 lots. |

I tallied my first box because I was going to volunteer for the Cent Project, but stopped when I got no reply from (Chris?). It was a bunch of work & I already check my stuff for key dates/errors and it was just eating into my sort time! Congrats, swimmingly, especially for sharing.
I made up an Excel spreadsheet with some macros that lets me rapidly use the PC keypad to enter dates & a symbol for mints, and it puts the totals in a little matrix box. If anyone wants to give it a try, email me and I'll give you a copy. I don't think you can attach files here, can you? |

| You must be logged in to see this link. I looked up the centproject and learned a few things. I'm going to change my sort method for older coins after reading this. |

Yeah, I read the same thing about sorting before I started & use a modified version of that with some success. I cut five 8 or 10" pcs of pvc pipe with a 3/4" i.d. in half lengthwise and mounted them at a backward angle in a block of 2x4. So I have 10 half-tubes to stack the coins in by last year digit, face up. I stack them for one decade (ie 80's first, etc) and throw the other decades into 20 cups also by last year digits. I then look through the stacked coins, zeroing in on key date/error year, throwing the junk (or copper) into a final coffee can to either roll (copper) or dump (zinc). Then I flip & look at the coins in the cups & do the same.
I picked up right away on his logic- handle the coins as few times as possible. |
