My father-in-law got a bunch of foreign coins at a sale last weekend for $5. I weighed them and they weighed 1.5 lbs. There was a lot of nickel coins, so they were worth it just for the nickel. The bulion that I have identified so far is:
1- silver mexican peso 1961 2 silver guilders from the neatherlands 1 silver coin with an Egyptian head on it.
I have yet to find coins at a garage sale. I have started asking and one lady took my # down but never called. My only related find was an 18K gold filled (basically gold plated I was told) Seiko watch at a garage sale for $1.00. I have no clue what it's worth but will have the local coin/jewelry shop take a look next week.
My hobby: collecting real money 1 copper cent or nickel at a time.
how do you find out the metal content of the coins?
Yes, we looked up the content after the fact.
As far as knowing their content, I bought a used "Standard Catalog of World Coins" It tells the composition but doesn't tell the % of composition unless the coin is made from PM.
