An observation and question here. A cursory check shows coin shows coming up this fall and winter for my area. Woo hoo. I can generally gather that shows are held year round, maybe ? I would think they would be as weather is not something that should affect a collector's interests all the time. Maybe bad snow and ice would discourage driving from NY to MA for a show, but other than that, local interests would nurture a strong following, right?

It depends on your local area. In some places you'll have to drive a good bit just to go to a show once a year. Other places have shows once a month or more. The more frequent shows tend to be by local coin clubs, where you'll see the same faces each time. Then, once or twice a year, there might be a larger regional or national coin show somewhere in your area.
I don't see any reason not to look at or buy coins in the winter.

I go to coin shows at least once a month. They are a great place to buy and sell, as well as to socialize with other collectors I have known for years. If your area has a coin club, they probably hold an annual show. Join the club.. go to the meetings.. they will also keep you informed of any upcoming shows in your area. I often carpool with other club members to attend some of the shows that are further away. |
If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

I go to about 2 to 4 coin shows a month. 3 of them are withing about 15 miles of my house. There are 3 that are every month on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Sundays of each month. 2 are rather small of about 20 to 30 dealers. 1 has from 80 to 100 dealers. There are occationally a few more larger ones around me that are excessively much larger. For the Month of September there are at least 9 coin shows in my state. One is for 3 or 4 days but is about 20 miles from my house so won't go to that one. Supposed to be a really big one at a place about 4 or 5 miles from my house but have to pay to park, pay to get in, prices of all coins are jacked up so although it's close, I avoid that one too. All of these coin shows are not from coin clubs but from coin organizations such as NOISE. If you want my opinion about coin shows it is that the larger the show, the higher the prices of the coins. The reason is actually logical. For very large coin shows they usually last several days. The dealers stay at hotels or motels. They have to eat out also for most of the time they are there. Then of course there is their transportation to and from there. All this cost money and is usually tagged on to the prices of the coins they sell. Smaller coin shows are usually, not always, with dealers that can come in the morning and go home at night. Much less expenditures so they can sell for less also. Then of course there is the notariety of the larger coin shows that are advertised so the customers are also more so again, dealers can sell for more knowing there are more customers to deal with. As to these coin shows being held year round. YES. Even on holidays, in the snow, rain, during the superbowl and anything else. Our area just got smashed with the heaviest rain fall in our weather history, roads closed, houses flooded, power out in many areas, trees downed and there is a coin show in progress today. Friend of mine just called and asked why I wasn't there. |
