I was pleasantly shocked. I've been lukewarm on McCain since he drove Romney out of the race, but I feel much better about his chances now.
I was out getting lunch when I got a message on the Blackberry asking if I knew who he picked, with the single comment "Unreal". My heart was in my throat thinking maybe he went with Lieberman, or (gasp) Teddy Kennedy.
What do you think?

McCain has been hammering on Obama about his lack of experience. But McCain has selected Palin as his running mate. Before her term as Alaska governor, she was the mayor of a small town up there. I don't want her "a heartbeat away from the presidency".
I understand why McCain selected a woman, but not sure why he chose Palin. There are so many strong women within the Republican party -- Carla Fiorini, Kay Bailey Hutchinson, Christine Todd Whitman, just to name a very few -- Palin strikes me as an odd choice.
She does toe the party line, though, and is virtually guaranteed to keep quiet and try to deliver the women's vote.
This is going to be an exciting election, can't wait to see how it plays out. What's that saying? "May you live in interesting times." |

I'm still not voting for either party so I don't care. Obama has the same lack of experience and will be in the presidency, how is that different or better?

Bluegill, tt's interesting that McCain chose a running mate with no experience, since that's his main criticism of Obama. Obama, for his part, selected a running mate who's been in Washington almost as long as I've been alive . . . yet his main criticism of McCain was that he's been in Washington too long. None of this makes any sense to me.
The funny thing is, I know very few people who are happy with either party's presidential nominee. I wonder what voter turnout will be like. You're not alone in saying you plan to sit this one out. (IMO, what the Republican party did to Ron Paul is shameful. Who knows how many votes the Republican party could pick up if they would be more welcoming toward Paul? Paul's supporters would be able to bring a lot of energy to the party.)
I say we go ahead and just settle this contest with a 4-way cage match on pay per view. |

| Oh, forgot to add: I think McCain's choice of a woman as his running mate is a perfect counterpoint to Obama's extremely poor choice of VP. I think this will seal the election for him. Yep, I'm calling it right here -- McCain, and I don't think it will be close. |

Neckro I like your thinking. Ever seen "Hacking Democracy"? Really good movie, everyone should check out.
As for McCain's vp pick. It still makes him a warmonger and only serves to make him look like more of a dotty old man.

| Palin does have more executive experience than Obama. Running the largest landmass in the US, and running a state just smaller in population than Delaware VP candidate. She is not running for President like Obama, she is running for VP. Being a governor is more like being president than being a senator. She also has high ethics, similar to McCain. Both oppose pork barrel spending and small government. I wish Palin had more experience, but based on everything I've heard so far about her, she has good honest decision making. |

| I agree that it's good that Palin has at least had some executive experience, even if she's been governor less than two years. Has Obama sponsored and/or shepherded through any substantive legislation in the 3-1/2 years he's been in the Senate? Anyone elected empty-shirt just show up in the Senate chamber and cast votes. I don't feel confident that Obama has the executive-type experience needed to run the country, nor do I feel that he has the political gonads to go nose-to-nose with Russia, Iran, North Korea, Syria, etc. McCain might be old and seem a bit stale to some people, but at least he's been tested as a legislator and as a member of the military and he's not afraid to tick people off if it will bring about a greater good. |

She's a former beauty queen and a lot better looking then Hillary! Here is a good Canadian perspective You must be logged in to see this link. Interesting clips:
Sarah Palin as his running mate is hugely cunning, but risky. The one-time beauty queen, who did a photo spread in December in Vogue, is a head turner. She'll grab voters' attention, which is the first order of business given the U.S. media's obsession with Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama.
After criticizing Obama's celebrity style, McCain has pocketed his own celeb. And the choice represents a few firsts, just as the Obama candidacy represents a breakthrough for blacks.Palin is the first woman to run as a vice-presidential candidate for the Republicans and the first Alaskan to run on a national ticket for president or vice-president.
Importantly, Palin has no discernible ties to the desperately unpopular Bush administration.
At 44, she'd be there to replace the aging president should he keel over. Heck, she's three years younger than Obama.
Palin also, quite obviously, is a woman -- presumably of potential appeal to all those Hillary Clinton adherents so disheartened when their candidate cruelly collided with a glass ceiling in the Democratic party tent.
But while they have gender in common, Palin likely wouldn't be permitted to join the ranks of Clinton's "sisterhood of pantsuits." She's the New York's senator ideological opposite.
The mother of five is anti-not to be dissussed and wants to see Roe v. Wade overturned.
She opposes same-sex marriage and supports the teaching of creationism alongside evolution. In high school, she headed the school Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
When Palin was a sprout, she'd wake up at 3 a.m. to go moose hunting with her school teacher dad. She's a lifelong member of the National Rifle Association and is dead against having polar bears listed as an endangered species. She favours drilling in the environmentally sensitive Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, which even McCain opposes.
Her 18-year-old son, Track Palin, is to deploy to Iraq in 10 days.
Palin has a reputation as a libertarian, possessed of strong ethics. Since becoming governor in 2006, she has tried hard to clean up Alaska's sometimes shady political practices; one of her first acts was to sell off the gubernatorial airplane.
The Idaho-born Palin, who has lived in Alaska most of her life, is also considered highly knowledgeable about a major issue for Americans -- energy and gas prices. She chairs the Interstate Oil and Gas Compact Commission, the largest interstate organization in the U.S., and is former chairwoman of the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission. |

I'll have to give Palin a second chance, she might really be what the country needs.

I've noticed a couple of posts regarding how businesses lobby and run the country, and in good nature like to point out the following; When republicans hold office, businesses run the country. When the Democrats hold office, the NEA runs the country, albeit with more party kickback. NEA is the #1 supporter of the democrats. Govt $$-> Teachers->NEA->DNC. More $$ for education = more $$ for teachers = more $$ for the NEA = more $$ for the DNC.
I'm not pointing out the other side only because we all know it already.(Hence this post)
Don't take this as a party attack. I just don't like situations where half the truth is spread around like it's the whole truth. Neither side has ANY innocence in these schemes, but I notice the news media con-people NEVER bring up the other half of the truth, and most people don't hear half the truth most of the time.
Our Democratic republic is 100% dependent on a well and truthfully informed populace, and IMHO I consider the editorialized spinning of the news and failure to provide the whole truth as an act of treason and/or anarchy. If that trial ever comes up (HA!) many people had better pray I don't sit on the jury.

I think Palin has presented herself well so far. I want to see if she can keep it up. It appears that she has done some good things while in office in Alaska, however Alaska has a population less than the city of Detroit and a huge land mass so creating change seems like it should be a lot easier there with a lot less minds to change and a lot more natural resources to take advantage of. I thought the Democratic convention speakers did well last week and am looking forward to the Republicans this week.

| So instead of "noun-verb-POW" it'll be "noun-verb-mother of five". So many strong Republican women and he picks Palin? This shows some really poor judgment on McCain's part. She seems like a good person, but not one whose finger I want anywhere near the button. I also have MAJOR misgivings about her stances on the "God, guns, and gays" type issues, but she probably couldn't do much about those anyway. |

I'm glad at least one of the four Pres/VP picks this cycle has executive branch experience. Americans want change... and who better to bring it about than a bunch of senators?!?
Of what I've read so far, Palin's fiscal attitudes seem in line with mine, but her social policies are far from mine. What a pity there's no viable party left for the "Guns for Gay Atheists" crowd. |
