or are the ridges on at least the obverse side very pronounced compared to other years? I've been keeping an eye out for 1972s because that's the year my girlfriend was born and I've been plucking them out of my piles for her, and it just seems like the ridge on the obverse side is the most distinguishing characteristic of '72s. Is it just me, or do you guys tend to notice this as well?

As a cost-cutting measure, the Mint has been gradually reducing the relief on coins over the last forty years. Take any two coins dated 30 years apart, and compare them side by side to see it firsthand.

This is true of the 1972's - And look at the 1969's - there mostly weak strikes.

The 1972s have a much more distinct rim on the obverse than most other years, but yeah, the relief is much less on newer cents, even copper ones, but I can usually tell the older wheats in my zinc pile just by looking at the relief. If I can't read the date, 85 percent of the time it's a zinc.

Having said that, I've just started checking my zinc pile much more thoroughly after the past two days of finding an 1887 IH and a 1909-VDB, so there may be other older cents I've missed. But now that I know what to look for in my zinc pile (thank to much more seasoned and wiser penny hoarders) I hope to have a lot more luck soon.
