I have had fun trying to put together complete collections of the coins I sort. This morning, I filled in what I could in a Dansco album of the best of the half dollars I have kept from my sorts. I have been saving what I thought were better specimens for a couple of years. Many of the coins are only in "very fine" range, but I found them myself from my sorting efforts. I am particularly proud of a 1966 which has quite a bit of mint luster still. I get some satisfaction of putting together an album from coins I have found myself, rather than buying them.
In filling in the album, I noticed that the coins I had kept from the 80s were in poor condition when compared to all other decades, even the silver I have been able to prospect from half dollar boxes. What's up with that? Are any of you doing what I am, and if so, have you noticed coins from the 80s having more circulation wear?
The foregoing simply struck me as being odd. I have no explanation as to why half dollars from the 80s would be in worse condition than those from the 70s or 60s.

Yes, and I'm resisting the urge to start doing so with halves...
As to the '80s era coins having more wear than the older ones, I haven't really noticed. But rest assured now that you mentioned it my compulsive self will be checking from now on. You had to say something...
I have found several Ag's that still have the mint luster.

Sorry, well I am on this topic and sorry to move away for a moment from yours main thrust TenBears.
I propose that Casinos are a closed system. I doubt they move out $.50 they just reuse them. Gamblers don't look at the coins they just feed them to the machine and want to trade them in for green. If you can go in there and pull out $500 to $1000 in $.50 I think you can do well. You will of course bleed them dry after a while but you may also be able to dump nickel there or pennies as they have automatic counting machines.
Rant over
Thanks

Casinos around here don't use any coins. They print out pieces of paper that you then take to another machine to redeem for cash.

Are there still casinos that use coins anywhere? I'm not a big casino goer as I prefer a sure thing, but would go silver hunting at the casino LOL.
With all the changes in coin composition the slot machines can hardly recognize good from bad coins now. |

I think an Indian casino around here might use coins. I don't know as they only have slot machines and I play Roulette. Maybe I should go and check it out.

| The only coin-op slots I'm aware of in the US are in dwindling numbers on Fremont Street in Vegas. |

I wish we had casinos in Texas. |

Coins in casinos and/or any gambling place are fading due to way to much trouble. Even some places for kids with games such as that chuck-e-cheeze place are using thier own coins. With half dollars I've found the ones from the early 70's are the ones that are excessively worn. Better off just going to a bank and getting the halves there. |
