Now that CuNi Nickels are no longer worth the weight in metal value, what do we do with our stashes? It is taken me too long to build up hundreds of pounds of CDN CuNi coins to just roll them all up and deposit them. However if I was in the US where no sorting is needed except to pull out the international, Canadian and US Silver, I might take a different view. Perhaps the fall in commodity metal prices will be short lived. But then again, what exactly is the market for CuNi (make more coins?).

Aw, just start rolling and stick them back in the garage. By the time you finish, the metal value will have increased again. |

Dude, I've save it, just like it went up in the past, it will go up again. Nothing stays at the top for very long.

Hey! The melt value of U.S. nickels are still something like 000.61% over face value. I'll hang on to that.
Since I starting hoarding nickels this isn't the first time they fell to 100% or lower than face melt value. They bounced right back up to almost 200% at one point.
As soon as the melt ban on nickels is over I plan to sell them to the shipyards to be used on making nuclear submarines. That is if I don't turn them in for silver first. And that's provided there is still a bank left in business to bring them back too. |

Hey you Americans got it good at over face still. The melt on Canadian CuNi is sub-face.
As for a bank to sell them too...you have not picked your loser yet in the members only area. I'm trying hard to brighten up the whole bank failure story in my own little way. |

You still have mid teens percentages of pure Ni coins available in Canada.
Forget the CuNi's for now and concentrate on "the good stuff".

The melt value of a US nickel is, as of today, ... five cents. Nevertheless, there is no dilemna in my mind. Holding a hoard of nickels is as good or better way of holding emergency cash than anything else. Now, if one had to bug out of town with five to ten thousand face in nickels, that might be a different story.
I don't know how Ardent does it though, just holding nickels without sorting them. I couldn't stand not sorting that stash for silver, buffalo, and whatever other goodies it might contain. |

Rich is not owing any money to anybody, and not spending what you haven't got." Robert Ruark

So the melt value of a five cent coin is only five cents melt, at least it is comforting to know there is a US Coin worth its face value (excluding copper cents) and can be obtained without too much trouble.
For five cent hoarders there is neither profit or loss, just a break even in value, unlike those who invested in the wrong hedge funds and stocks who lost money today. All things being equal, it is better to break even than to lose money on the deal, even if the deal is buying nickels to set aside to sell or cash in if needed. |

nickels are a safe bet. you cant lose money on it. its better than putting $100+ week into a 401k and losing $120 for the past year or so. ive made more profit on ebay than my 401k...thats sad. |
