For the second week in a row because of an unexpected cash crunch, I've had to take the standing order of $200 in Brinks boxes I get from one bank and turn right around and deposit them in my main bank to cover some unexpected expenses. One of the newer tellers (at least she's new at this branch--although she's probably in her 50s, so maybe she's worked for a bank for a while) seemed a bit irked that I was bringing these sealed Brinks boxes in and she asked me where I got them. I told her that I collect old pennies and that I typically have a lot of pennies at home but that I had to deposit these into my account to cover some bills that had come up.

Here's what I'm worried about: Let's say that one of the tellers where I've been depositing these Brinks-sealed boxes tells Brinks that I've been bringing these boxes in. Could word get back to the bank where I've been picking the boxes up that I'm turning right around and depositing them somewhere else (even though this is only the second time, albeit the second week in a row, that I've had to do this)? I don't want to get blacklisted by either Brinks or any of my supply banks, especially not the one I picked these boxes up at because they've got absolutely the friendliest tellers and branch manager of any of the banks I have an account at. Or is this particular teller probably just irked that she's having to lift these boxes? Should I be concerned about them blabbing to Brinks and Brinks tracing the boxes to the bank where I picked them up, etc.?

I wouldn't worry about Brinks. How much profit and extra jobs do you think the combined might of us penny sorters generate at Brinks? I am sure they love people shuffling around coins.

As for the bank, I would be worried that they cut you off even if they don't talk to the other bank. I am sure they don't want their vault filled with Brink's boxes of pennies. Maybe they will get mad and ask you to put your name and address on every roll.

If I were, I would lower your standing order(s) for boxes of pennies. Don't get rid of the orders, but lower them down and then raise them again later when you are ready. I have done this several times as well as switched back and forth between different types of coins. My regular buy banks that know me as a coin collector don't even blink if I modify a standing coin order.

It is too bad that you don't live closer to another hoarder. I, for one, would be happy to buy your unsorted boxes at face...

Well, the one hoarder I do live near at least three days a week (Gr33nday33) doesn't seem to be doing the volume I'm doing, so it'd be hit and miss. But if I'm ever heading your way and I have a backlog of boxes, Horgad, I'd be happy to sell them to you.

More likely is the teller at one bank talking with the teller at another bank about the crazy penny guy just because they happen to be friends and it was something out of the ordinary. I agree with Horgad that you might want to lower your standing orders to a level that doesn't stretch you too close to the wire. I know what you mean about sometimes needing to free up cash to pay bills. I had to crank out a few boxes this week to cover a new machine I bought.. a Glory WS-21. I just couldn't bring myself to turn in virgin boxes though. Instead I stay up late running the sorting machine, the counters, and the rollers until I have enough zinc to cover whatever I need to pay for that week. Amazing how much money you can up come with in a few days if you just focus on getting them run through the Ryedale. And there is hardly any shrinkage due to the copper you keep.

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

You know . . . quite honestly, what business is it of hers? You're a customer -- it's your main bank. I've never met you, Nickelless, but I feel confident in saying that you are almost certainly a polite, friendly, clean cut guy. Why should she be irked because you brought in 16 boxes of pennies over the course of two weeks? So you're standing there in line, out in the open, and she's basically put you in the position of having to disclose your personal finances in order for her to accept your deposit.

So what if she says something to a Brinks delivery guy? You think he's going to pay a bit of attention to that cranky old gasbag?

I would never dump an unopened box. Open it, then dump it. The bank has to be wondering if you just stole the box, otherwise what possible reason do you have to be buying and selling unopened coin boxes.

Thanks, Ant, I hope I've got the politeness and friendliness down pat, but to tell you the truth, I just got a haircut in May for the first time since 2004 (I donated 12 inches of hair to Locks of Love, second time since 2001) and I can't remember the last time I was clean-shaven.

Well, that just goes to prove the teller was a little cuckoo. What kind of person hates on Grizzly Adams?

Make sure you know your other local penny hoarders, maybe they would want the unsealed boxes.

I agree with HCBTT the network of tellers that have friends that are tellers is greater than Brink's concern over where the pennies come from....

Remember that Brinks gets paid to pick up coin... Then paid again to sell them back I doubt they care as long as they get paid.

however I also agree that if you need to free up cash and you are getting only 20-30% copper (and you have a Ryedale of course)just dont sleep! lol stay up and process more coin!!..... my experience is that one of the largest costs to this hobby isn't the pennies its the time and gas spent getting the coin in the first place... so I wouldn't want to return very many boxes as you have to duplicate your effort to get them back!

But alot of people buy sealed boxes of coin for collecting and sooner or later turn them in.... one of my banks just called me about $40 of uncirculated state quarters a lady brought back in due to needing the money (I am afraid we will see alot more of this coming this winter due to ecinomic down turns) So dont worry! I cant imagine it will effect you in the long haul!

Gary

Happy Prospecting!

Don't worry about it, no law against being a nut.

I had a similar situation recently. During a recent nickel drive buy one of the tellers asked if I was looking for dates. I mentioned to her about the silver war nickels. Another one mentioned that I never brought any nickels back. I looked at her and said, "Do you want them back?" She pulled back a little and then said, "Sure." I told her that I was hauling them back to Cleveland loose in 50 pound bags and it would sure help if I could dump them here". She then changed the subject. If I decide to turn my hoard in to buy cheap silver I'll be sure to start there.

Gives whole new meaning to the phrase, "Backing up Da truck'.
