So my father recently passed away and I inherited his coin collection which had been sitting in his safety deposit box for the last 20 years. Apparently he and his parents collected them when he was a young child.
Included in the collection:
Proof sets 1952-1980 from Denver and Philedelphia mints.
Full set of EVERY wheat penny from all mints except 1909-S VDB :(
Full set of Buffalo Nickles Full set of mercury dimes
Full liberty eagle gold coin set ranging in dates from 1904 to 1851 (the 1851 is a $1 gold coin but I dont think its an eagle, but its in the little plastic case with the rest).
odd coins including 1869 3 cent peice, 1871 "half-dime" and 1905,1906 nickles I guess (it has a "V" on the back)
2 1882 & 1 1883 Uncirculated Carson City Morgan dollars
10 1oz .999 silver bars
5 Uncirculated Silver "Ikes" in the little blue envelopes.
And to top it off about $1000 dollars face in silver quarters, dimes, peace dollars, morgan dollars, walking liberty half dollars, and kennedy half dollars.
There are a few more things but I'm not sure what they are, I'll add them later, once I look them up.

Forgot to add in the paper stuff:
100 $2 bills
1917 $2 bill (the thing is huge)
1899 & 1923 $1 Silver Certificates.
Also, anyone have any ballpark estimate as to what this collection might be worth. I wouldn't sell, Just curious. Aside from the bunches of morgan and peace dollars, everything else is in very good looking condition, I'm no coin grader but all the hairlines are visible, and all the words are sharp on all the gold coins and pretty much everything. |

I'm glad you're proud of your dad's collecting accomplishments. I hope my descendants are as enthusiastic and as reverent of my collection when I pass it along.
I think my father collected nickels for a number of years. If I ever end up with his folders, I'll probably not integrate them with my collection. Instead, I'll leave it as the My Father Memorial Collection in his honor. |

| My Grand father passed away, and he had coins from his father, and grandfather comming from Russia. I saw a glimps of them, he had a very nice collection going on. But since we where in Cali, while he was in NJ. My mother Cousin had stolen the entire collection and denies having to deal with it. I wish I would've taken a few of them to have by him. You're lucky you didn't have other relative come and take things that belonged to you. |

Low $13,500 High $15,000 maybe more.Depends if there is a ultra rare coin.
Not including the Gold set because I don't understand exactly what you mean by (Full liberty eagle gold coin set ranging in dates from 1904 to 1851 )
$1,$5,$10,$20...? Only 4 coins...? One of each...?
If so approx. $2,000 and up.
Memories of your father...
PRICELESS...

Way too vague to say. Fidelitrade puts the $1000 face 90% at 12,048.58 COB today. can't tell about the gold.
given this is a hoarding forum...... you might consider keeping it a while. might be worth more come november anyway. |

| I found the gold coins, Its the 1,2.5,5,10,and 20 gold coins, and then it has 2 more coins that are similar. A $3 gold coin (just says $3 gold coin on pcgs) and a $1 indian princess gold coin. I would assume the $3 gold coin is an indian princess too because the face is the same on both of them. I got them looked at by my local coin dealer, he said they were all around AU-55? Any guesses what the gold set alone might go for? And again, I would never sell it, I'm just curious to see how much more its worth now as compared to what my father paid for it. |

For looking up coin values, I like: You must be logged in to see this link.
PCGS.com also has a price guide, but it is concentrated on encapsulated high quality coins.
For many sets, the 'key dates' are worth hundreds of dollars, and the others are common, worth 20c to a few dollars each.
The price of bulk silver for the last year or so has been 12-13 times face value.

| well I got around to counting it all, some of the dimes and quarters that I assumed were silver by looking at the top and bottom of the rolls weren't silver, but its still 826.50 total, which is better than my total of like 8 dollars face the day before :) |

If you want a real valuation you may want to take them to a coin dealer for some help. If you don't mind people knowing what you have.
Second thought. I bet this man lived like he was really poor his whole life to save a bundle like this. Did he live like a poor man? |

Only if you can actually trust the dealer. There are a lot of shady dealers out there. Maybe go to several....

I would just search for them on ebay. You would get a live up to date price. Just watch a few auction of your coins and see what they end up at. Need to make sure they are the same grade though. Grade matters a lot!! AU 55 is really good on those gold coins.

If that 1916d Mercury dime is in nice shape, then it by itself could be worth many thousands!

No, lol, my dad didn't live like he was poor, his parents did alot of the collecting for him, I imagine he collected all the dimes, wheats, and such. But the majority of the expensive coins and prof sets were probbably bought by his parents as birthday or christmas gifts, I'm not sure how he got ahold of all the morgans and peace dollars.

It is difficult to even attempt a valuation on that collection due to so many lack of details. For instance is the FULL set of Mercury Dimes in an Album? If so where there slots for the 42/41 and 42D/41 and Micro S? Note that the 16D, 21, 21D, 42/41, 42D/41 alone in the worst grades would be valued at over $2,000. Did the Buffalo Nickels contain the 16Double Die? 18D/17? 36D 3 legged, 37D 3 legged? Your Cent collection? A 14D, 22Plain, etc.? Note your proof sets may contain sets valued at as much as $40,000 or more pending on certain info. What you need to do is go to a coin store or on line and buy a Red Book by Whitman Publishing. Or go to the Whitman Web site. Even normally cheaper at Walmart web sites for books. The info is great but the prices are excessive and are what a dealer would charge, not what you would normally get yourself. Then sit down and learn what you have. DO NOT TAKE THOSE COINS TO A COIN STORE. Of course you've added this all to your income taxes??????? |
