Damaged and mutilated coins..... The United States Mint will take back damaged coins. I have the website address around here somewhere, but not handy.... (a lot of good I am, do a search).
I roll elongated coins, not all of them turn out when I'm changing out die rings and re-adjusting the machine. These imperfect coins are called miss-rolls. In the case of my untimely death I would hate for these coins that aren't up to my standards to fall into the hands of an ebayer or other coin dealer. Furthermore, it is currently illegal to melt them, so I send them back to the United States Mint, and even though I trust the U.S. Mint, I still clip every imperfect EC I roll with a pair of wire snips to protect my design integrity.
The coins must be seperated in the following denominations; Cents, Nickels, Clad. I'm not sure about the new dollar coins. You must have at least 1# of whatever denomination your sending in. The package should be sent certified, and in 6-8 weeks you will get a check. The website will have the approximate return rates.
If I remember correctly its the damaged and mutilated department. You can print off a pdf document explaining the whole process. I've had a few questions concerning this, I thought it would be a good forum to discuss it in.
Yes, I have returned them to the mint. Yes, I have got a check from them.

| I have sent mutilated coin to the mint. It needs to go to the Philadelphia mint but all of the infromation is available on their website. A little slow, but you get a check. For your info, they pay for pennies based on the weight of copper, so when you send in zinc pennies you won't get full value, $50 copper weighs about 34 lbs, zinc about 28 lbs so you need to send in 34 lbs of zinc to get $50 back. They may want your SSN before they send a check. |

| Even the mint figures a zinc penny is not worth a penny. Priceless! I found in the Mint FAQ that they send the damaged coins of to be made into new sheets to punch blanks from. |
