My brother picked up three $50 bags of loose pennies for me on Friday--the first two that I mentioned on another thread gave me just under 35 percent coppers. The third bag, from a different branch, had the most new-looking pennies from the early '70s I think I've ever seen in one batch, and on my first-run sort for this bag, out of $50, I got $43.64 in coppers. I'm absolutely flabbergasted. Anyone else ever have this kind of luck?
Sorry, Gr33nday43, it wasn't a bank in Owensboro.

| Gasoline prices = olds jars of pennies being cashed in at banks to fill the gas tank. Especially in poor areas in cities. My bank teller told me they are overwhelmed with rolled change these days. I saw she had a huge quantity of rolled pennies on her counter and asked where she got them? She said an old man brought them in. Bought them all and got a great % of copper and lots of wheats also. Times are good for copper collecting. |

| cupro nickel is correct. You were lucky enought to hit a copper "vein". when i started getting rolls from banks last year, i think on my 2nd trip i got 20 rolls and they were something like 98% copper, mostly from 60's and 70's and mostly unc. i thought that this trend of collecting copper pennies had passed! but i was assured by other copperheads otherwise. you have to remember most people are not like us. they are what we call the "uninformed", cashing in old stashes of pennies and other coins, either collected over the years by an older family member, or possibly by a wife whose husband collected has died, leaving her with an accumulation which, to her, is not worth more than face value. i see more of these from like the 80's than earlier but 60's and 70 accumulations exist out there. |

Yes, the hoards are coming in. Last week on Saturday I got caught behind two guys dumping a 5 gal water jug of change they said one of them had been working on for 12 years. The total was $1978. On Monday the same, a family dumping a couple of gallon buckets of change totaling $1011. This is likely going to be a good time. My wife suggests we give quarters a shot. Actually, I've had that in mind myself. Two weeks ago a guard at the bank showed me a 1928 standing liberty quarter he managed to save from the coin counter. About a F-VF. He wouldn't sell. |

No.
I have had just the opposite results with CWR's. At best the Cu percentages will be the usual for my area. But forget about the wheats, IH's, '43s, older Canadians and cool foreign stuff.
The only thing about CWR's that Brinks and CWI don't have is a higher percentage of pond pennies and filthy greasy nasty coins.
There is something about the Western Metro Detroit area when it comes to things like this that I can't explain.
For now I actually prefer the Brinks and CWI boxes...

I did some CU bags in the upper sixty percentile range.

| There was a carnival in town this week. I think I may hit up as many banks as I can for CWRs. I have a feeling much of the town folks coins ended up being deposited locally. If not one bank, then maybe another, but the bed of dormant copper and silver has been raked up IMHO. Boo yah. |

| I hit a 90% 25 dollar box awhile back. It was odd in that almost all of the coins that weren't copper were 2007'S. |
Are you throwing that out? |

| I've had 90% bags, most of them from new banks that I've never been to that are happy to see pennies go. I'd be willing to bet yours is the same case, just a bag of pennies that has been sitting in the vault for 20 years, and when you asked for pennies they smiled and pulled it out. |

| I've cleaned up all the pennies that have been gathering dust in the vaults for years in my town. My percentages dropped from 50% to maybe 35% as a result. Now into more true circulatating coin for the most part. |

| This doesnt qualify as a high percentage but it is on the way there, and it is also another indicator of the times: i got $10 in pennies today and 4 of the rolls were those ugly clear plastic wrapped rolls. they were uncirculated 1996 pennies - 12 years old. certainly not a big copper score nor a phenominal nusmismatic find, but it is encouraging in that PEOPLE ARE DEFINATELY CASHING IN THEIR OLD HOARDS. (This one not so old) Absolutely, people, get to banks and look over as much change as you can, dollar bills also, for those who are inclined. this is the golden age of hoarding courtesy of the uninformed. |

I agree, People are cashing in those change jars.... Its tough times for many with prices going up on essentials. Somebody said it'd be a great time for sorters, I believe this is true.
In a $25 box of cents I recently found close to 300 wheat coins. I don't recall the copper percentage, but I figured it without the wheats.... I didn't write it down. It was like hittig a gold mine, though almost all of them were in the 40's and 50's. |
