I sort copper coins, not necessarily to hoard them, but to stock pile them. I own and operate a few Elongated Coin machines. For those of you who might not be familiar with the good ol' EC (Elongated Coin), its the smashed penny souvenir machine that you find on vacation. EC collectors prefer pre-82 cents (I know some 82's are copper, but thats what we call them). Zinc (post-82) elongateds are shunned by the typical collector.
Elongated coins have been around for a long time, they became known at the 1893 Expo. However, they have been recorded being made hundreds of years before that.
Elongated rollers such as myself are often searching for copper cents. Now that I use a coin sorter, I'm not so far behind in the search. We not only pull the copper out of circulation like the hoarders, but we clean the coins before we roll them through the machine. Most collectors and rollers use either a roatary tumbler, or a vibrating tumbler to accomplish this.
After the copper coin is cleaned, I stain the head side of the copper coin before I roll it, this way the lincoln head with the date will show up on the reverse of the Elongate.
I've been asked what I keep talking about when I bring up the ECs, its Elongated coins like I've stated above. I do custom work as well! What kind of hoarder are you if you don't have your own business card on a custom copper coin? LOL.
I will bring up the topic of returning coins to the mint in another thread.
Does anybody here have Elongated coins? or do you have one that you are wondering about?

You have EC machines??!? Very cool -- I love those things!
I have a few dozen elongated coins. I started collecting them for my son. Now he is old enough to collect them on his own and he does enjoy hunting down the machines. We found a website that lists state by state where some machines are, which has been helpful. Now we have a whole list of places to hit. I wish I had known about the preference for copper cents when we started a few years ago-- oh well.
Are your machines your own private ones, or do you lease them out? Which designs do you have?
Welcome to the board, BTW! |

Thanks Ant, Yes, I do have the EC machines (6 to be exact). One is what we call a vended machine, with a coin slot, but its not at a location. I do custom work, there is a fair market out there if you have a bit of talent. All my coins have a TDT by the start notch. If you go to the site you spoke of and look down under foreign coins, there is a listing of Private Rollers, some of my work is listed there.
There is also a club thats been around since 1963! TEC (The Elongated Collectors), we set up shop every year at the ANA (in a couple days in Baltimore). You can sign a minor up for only $6 per year ($12 for adults), and with the membership comes a quarterly newsletter, a membership nickel (yearly-different design), JR members get B-day coin, and then in each issue is 2-4 coins. There are often topics on copper in the newsletters, especially now that the EC collectors are worried about the metal content changing. If the cent goes to steel, its hard on the die images. Since it is a harder metal than copper (steel) a new coin would degrade the engraving quicker. Just a FYI, most machines are tuned in on a zinc coin, when you roll a beloved copper it'll be a bit shorter. There are ways to combat this, but that an elongated coin forum topic....
If anybody decides they'd like to join up, or join up a JR. member, let me know. I can send you a copy of a membership form! Put me down as a recruiter, and I get a free coin.... Upon receipt of joining, contact me with your TEC number and I will send you a package of my own coins! We kind of have a competition to see who can sign up the most members... There's no real prize, just bragging rights.
I have about 60+ of my own designs I've created, but over 150 different coins (dies purchased with machines, or through other venues).
Thanks once again Ant, TEC might be something your interested in signing up for! ty. |

I'm printing off the membership form from the website right now! There is a spot on there that says, "I learned of TEC from ____________" so I will put your name down there. Will that be enough to get you a referral credit?
Thank you for the generous offer of some of your sample coins. My son would love them. We have a few duplicates that I can send to you, too, if you're interested. They're pretty common designs but the locations might be some that you don't have. |

Are you throwing that out? |

What is the design? Is it copper or zinc. If a design is no longer available at a location it is considered "Retired", or for Disney collectors (fanatics) the call it "Off-Stage".
If you have an older design, such as a 33-34 worlds fair it can be worth a few bucks.... If you have the PIKE coin (not riding the Pike), its worth $5,000 or more.
The zinc can be discerned by the weight on a postal scale(2.7 grams), or a balance scale made from a popsicle stick and a copper penny. Zinc will also have dark grey streaks (the zinc showing through the copper after its been elongated), or if its older it'll even turn black. |

I collect these but only from places I visited.
When I collect regular coins, I don't buy any except for bullion or investment type coins.
I like to know that I found every coin in my collection. |
Buying: Peace/Morgan G+ at $15.00 copper cents at 1.3X wheat pennies at 3X
