Poll Question:
What do you do with your 1982 pennies?
(1982 was the change over year from mostly copper to mostly zinc. Some 1982 cents are copper, some are zinc)

I do a ring test by bouncing them on the table. The zinc coins make a thud, the coppers have a bright ring. |

Thus far, I keep them separate. I am currently in the middle of moving, so when I get settled I plan on devising a way to finally split the bad money '82s from the real cent '82s. |

I have noticed that I can tell the difference like that as well. The zincs sound kind of flat, while the coppers ring.

There's no poll like an old poll! With that said, I have recently started to keep them, but separate. |

I keep the coppers, and deposit the zincs. I made my own scale like the one in the following link. However, I did not have a tongue depressor so I used a wooden ruler and some small PVC - stuff I had lying around.

When I was sorting small loads I would separate them, now that I started hand sorting several boxes at a time I keep them in a separate container. Thought when I get a big enough load I will separate them. |

I have separate tubes for the seven types (large date and small date, copper and zinc, denver and philadelphia). When a tube gets full, I roll it and mark it and put it in a $25 box that is only for 1982. I have been saving 1982s since WAAAAY before I was saving coppers. I use a cool scale that weighs to the nearest tenth of a grain. I wish I had the funds to buy everyone's unsorted 1982s. I would like to "specialize" in these. I guess on a certain level, I already do.

I weigh and they go into the rest of the Cu's. a little 20 $ scale from feebay works great. Weighs to the tenth...I also have a pocket scale that weighs to the hundreth very stable but costs nearly 4 times as much as the other pocket scale. |

I weigh them and then still keep them separate and rolled by mint. |

I can tell the difference between copper and zinc '82s, but when/if I go to sell them, I don't want to have the issue come up that some or all of the 82s are not copper and in order to close the deal, I'd have to pick them out. Better to just let them go. It's just one year.
Though, it seems I find a "above average" amount of them while hand sorting. Perhaps that's because I'm so conscious of them. |

Whenever I sort loose coppers, either bought or found in the wild, I separate out the 1982's. I use my ACE to double check and make sure they are all copper. I save the 1982 coppers in a separate $25 penny box. I save my Ugly Abes in a separate box too. It's worth doing it since they are all copper. Years ago, I only saved coppers until 1981 because of the confusion in the many 1982 varieties. Nowadays, I keep all my coppers, except for a few really bad 1982's and others, which I let loose back in the wild. |

I can't tell the difference so at first I just sorted them to their separate bag (have maybe 1500?) but now I just skip right over them as I found that was slowing down my sorting a bit.
My scale only weighs to the nearest gram, so I can't tell the difference. |

I can almost always tell the difference between them so I'll keep the coppers and dump the zincs. If I can't tell I'll ring test them. |

UDEric...you shouldn't have any problem telling the difference between the copper pennies and the zinc ones from 1982 with this scale.
The 95% copper pennies will weigh 3.11 grams. The zinc ones will weigh 2.5 grams. If in doubt, then throw it out. But since your scale weighs in grams, you should be able to sort them with your scale.
Oops. .. ... .I am experiencing "brain fog" again today for some reason, don't know why, and as I was reading over this before posting, I think I understand now. Your scale will only display to whole numbers with no tenth or hundredth places, right, like 3 grams or 2 grams? Well, see if you can pick up a scale that will display to the tenth place or greater. They are pretty reasonable and you could use it for other coin collecting uses too.
Uthminsta...you write you are keeping all your 1982s. Is that regardless of condition? Most of the ones found here in Central Florida would probably be too cruddy (new coin grading term ) to be worth keeping. Are you doing it for numismatic reasons or just because you like them? Don't mean to sound nosy but I am curious as I know I save coins that the rest of you would not understand the reasoning behind why I save them either.
Enjoy your coin searches, everyone. |
