I just found a copper coated 43 Wheatie.
Am I imagining this? It's missing about a pie piece off to one side of it, and it's showing a little rust because of it, but the rest is fine and looks like copper.
I must be wrong, I thought they only minted steel this year. Were any coated?

Since a copper penny from 1943 is considered one of the rarer or rarest of errors, many people have tried to "make" their own copper pennies from that year and perhaps that is what you have found. If it sticks to a magnet, then it is steel and not the true rare error plus I doubt there would be any rust on a copper penny, although some I find sure have enough crud on them to be any sort of debris.
Let us know what you find out about it. |

If they didn't come from the mint like that, then someone tried to pull a fast one. The rust was the obvious give away, but the coating....wtf? How would someone be dumb enough to fall for it without the use of the magnet test first? |

If you ever found a 43 copper, you have a crowd pleaser.
I'm glad that copper-clad 43 didn't come my way.
I would have crapped my pants. The magnet would have been a huge disappointment |

I have had more than one copper-color-coated steel 43 cent over the years. I'm pretty sure the practice was very common, as several people wanted to get collectors to give the coin a real double-take. I would think that people would have had a good laugh over it, but hopefully no one has been... umm... "unfortunate" (dumb) enough to purchase such a coin for the value of an authentic 43 copper. It's an interesting conversation piece. Much like the gold-plated V nickels. The first year they were minted, they did not have the word CENTS on them, so an industrious man gold plated some, and used them as "$5 gold pieces." |

On the copper plated steel cents.. folks have been having fun with that for many, many years. I remember reading about someone that plated an entire bag of them and dropped them on the floor at the hotel where a major ANA convention was being held. |
If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

When it comes to doing a fake plate on coins there is no easy job than coating a steel coins with copper. All somebody has to do is drop an steel coin in Copper sulfate for a short time and the copper will stick to it. To make a 46 look like steel on the other hand one has to plate it with nickel or zinc. This takes a little more work like knowing the chemicals and having a DC power source. |
