I must say, this is my best find yet. A few ebay searches and I'd probably peg its value at about $50. Already twice the cost of the box, and that's by itself. Including the copper value and the face value of the remaining zincs, I'd say this box will end up being worth something like $80+. Not bad...

I'm starting to be very glad I have a source bank with a steady supply of CWI boxes, with a consistent copper content of about 25%.

Been sorting ordered boxes for barely a few months now and it's easily working out better than I had expected. This eagle just confirmed my dedication to the art of sorting. Going to get a couple hundred $$ more tomorrow.

Just had to get this one out, finding this eagle among piles of common crap took me back to my baseball card days in the early 90s.

Wow! Nice find. And to think I got excited when I found an Indian Head cent. The odds of finding a flying eagle in circulation must be 1 million to 1. Go buy a powerball ticket........RIGHT NOW!

I'd think it took you back more to the civil was era....
On another note... I'm pretty sure finding a flying eagle does NOT exclude you from the Rational Thinkers Club, but you should look up that thread and check with a guy named "TenBears"

Congrats on finding the eagle. And welcome to the board. It has to be beginners luck. I have been through 1.4 million pennies since the start of the year and I have only found 3 Indians.

(All kidding and jokes aside from the Indian Head related threads)

That's a da-- cool find. In fact, your Flying Eagle has to be one of the top finds of this forum. I think HoardCopper found a 1909 or two which have very high value as well. But, for overall "coolness", your Flying Eagle takes the cake. Congratulations.

I looked up the rational thinkers club, that was a good read. Fortunately for me there's nothing in the bylaws which forbid me from membership for having found that eagle! I've really only been through about 6 or 7 boxes at this point, so I haven't found any Indians yet. Now that my beginner's luck has likely worn out, it may be a while before I find anything else of significance.

I remember looking at it thinking "hmm, that wheat looks odd..." only to flip it over and realize what I had just found. I can't imagine how it wound up in circulation, but I can only assume it reentered by accident then came right to me. There's no way it stayed in the system for very long.

It looks fairly circulated, though. The back is pretty faded, the "One" in "One Cent" is barely visible. The front is clear though, albeit a little dirty. All the text is still readable.

I can upload a pic after I get back from work later today.

To add, I've actually been having really good luck overall with the boxes I've been getting. Copper percents are high, and I find a fair amount of wheats per box. A few centennial Canadians, a 1943 Canadian George IV, and one of the wheats I found was steel. I've also been finding a lot of 60's and 70's coins which look almost uncirculated, if that matters at all.

Still no 1909s, Indians, or silver dimes though.

Dang, that beats me by a year.. oldest I have found is an 1859 Indian. Congrats on your great find mingusdew and thanks for sharing it with us. I would place the odds at much greater than 1 in a million. I think there are 2 varieties of the 1858 Flying Eagle.. something to do with the motto.. there are probably pics in the Red Book of how to tell the difference.

Glad you found a 58.. that still leaves room for me to find a 57.. the 56 would be kinda tough.

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

Now selling Copper pennies. 1.6x plus shipping. Limited amounts available.

From looking at the auctions on ebay, the difference between the 2 versions seems to be the size of the motto's lettering. There's a small text design and a large text design.

It looks like the one I found is the small text design.

as promised here are pics of the coin I found:

pics didn't turn out as well as I had hoped, the details aren't the best. The lighting here at my desk isn't perfect and the flash is too bright. The coin looks more corroded in the image than it actually is.

Wow! Congradulations. It amazes me that coins that old are in circulation, but members of the forum find old coins all the time.

Look up the Indian Head Thread and stay away from the rational thinkers. If you ask hoard, he might make you an honary member of our tribe.

That's like being half pregnant. You have either found one of these imaginary Indian Heads or you haven't. The Indian Head guys just haven't grown out of believing in imaginary friends, so they invent these imaginary "Indians" to keep themselves company during long hours of solitary sorting. I can't imagine wanting to be an honorary member of a group that does the naked, feathered fired dance together or that sleeps together in a big pile like a bunch of hound dogs on a southern porch.
