I went to four different banks today, and NO ONE had any pennies. One gave me an excuse that there is a "penny shortage". Is there such a thing?

Hard to imagine a shortage, however as more and more people start to sort and save it is probably creating some temporary shortages as us hand sorters probably have quite a few zincs laying around waiting to be recirculated. I did have a bank last week that began limiting the amount I could buy and they won't order for me any more either. Oh well there are more banks around just have to fish more. |

Contrary to another post in another thread I am not causing a penny shortage in your city. I might be causing a penny and nickel shortage in my city, and a couple adjacent cities, but not yours. I am almost afraid to step up my buying from 2X a week at each bank in town, plus my regular Saturday multi-bank cleanup run in adjoining Cities. I've got pretty much all the coin overstock soaked up in town now, so am not able to pull as much from each branch as when I started. (or its all in my mind! No way I can effect the penny and nickel situation of 80,000 people).
Seriously, I did read that Jackson Metals is working with Brinks to source pennies in areas with penny surpluses, then "dumping" to use our termanology, the pennies where there are penny shortages. Think tractor trailer loads of pennies being sorted and shifted around.
So yes Penny shortages do happen - but from what I see here they are more branch to branch rather then a city wide issue (until I get my buying done that is).
And before HCBTT jumps on it - the branch that wants to limit your buying due to shortages is now your new dump bank. Hey they said they needed pennies right?

Penny shortage? What penny shortage? I haven't noticed any penny shortage.

As legacypac says.. if they need pennies, supply them with lots and lots of zinc pennies. Maybe they will remember you kindly when they have surpluses again. Or you could just switch to nickels. I remember in the good ol days back in the early 70's when there actually were some regional penny shortages. Grocery stores were paying 75 cents to a buck a roll for pennies.. Ah, those were the days!
Sorry to check in so late.. I had a coin club meeting tonight.. I was busy buying gold, silver and wheat pennies. |
