i know i know people will say it was tarnished or they were only made in 1944 and so on and so on. Im sure i found a steel 1994 d. I did some searches and i find people on the yahoo answer site asking about 1994 d steel penny. Is this a penny that is a undocumented/unreported mistake because it sure does seem like it. On yahoo answers people were saying that it was due to enviormental issues and the only time was 44 but its very intresting that someone else has the same issue with the same exact pennt and no one has any knowledge of this. I figured you guys could help.
Exactly. I could see a non-copper washed blank getting stamped.

I just recently found a 1997-d penny that appears to have the copper plating missing or something, it has the appearence of steel but is definately not, I am assuming it is 100% zinc or something.

if it were steel it would stick to a magnet. What it could be is that some chemistry class did an experiment to get the copper off. And its just a coincidence that its a 97d
