I collect small dollar coins (SBA, Sacs, Pres) and non silver halfs. I never intended to collect them, but when I'm at work and there are some in the register, I swap them out for the cash in my pocket.

Does anyone else do this?

Yes. I get them in rolls (or loose) from banks. From my experience, most bank tellers have about $10-$20 worth on hand.

I also use the US Post Office vending machines to condense my small change down into dollar coins. Just load everything in, buy one stamp, and get a whole lot of change back, usually in the form of Presidents. (Has anyone discovered an upper limit to how much those machines will accept first, or a limit to how much change it will give back?)

Saving one of each type for my folders, and enjoying spending the rest.

I just keep them in a jar. Everytime I get some, in the jar they go. I think I have like $120 in there.

I call it my reserve money. You know how people have hundreds of thousands of dollars stashed behind cabinets? I have a bunch of dollar coins in an old trophy.

I started keeping the dollar coins a few at a time. I started that when I was searching for errors in the new dollars. I keep a large metamucil jug for them. I also keep everything else in those jugs. At some point I'll cash them all in, but I think I've got every piece of change for the last 3 years in those jugs.

So, I added up all of my dollar/half dollar coins and came to a total of 118.50. I think when I get my next paycheck, Ill cash them in and buy some wheaties, since I can still get them unsearched for 4 cents each.
