Most interesting paragraph says: "Despite claims to the contrary by a lobbying group for the zinc industry that poses as a consumer organization cents are no longer circulating coins, in the traditional sense. Yes, they are still given out as change by some businesses, but they are seldom recirculated by their recipients, who are more likely to simply toss them into a jar."
Today I tried to spend some rolled nickels and pennies at a Dollar Store - and was refused! The clerk claimed she would have to open them, count and reroll them.
Next I tried to spend them at Sears. The two clerks refused to accept it. One said "We are not a bank". I said "Interesting you do not accept legal tender." This sucks since I spent all my paper money on nickels and Pennies yesterday. They got Mastercard instead - and I collected the airmiles instead.
There are claims of buying gas with zinc rolls - but I have not tried that yet.

Well I circulate enough boxes of pennies already to disprove that story - and I'm waiting on the Ryedale still. Wiped 9 Banks and credit unions out of pennies on Saturday LOL.
I believe that most of those uncirculating pennies are sitting 40 miles from the S Mint. |

I don't know how they're getting their stats, but I wonder if we will be helping the penny stay alive a few years longer with the demand we generate. I think our cumulative demand rate is high. |

I've done it a few times, so has HoardCopperByTheTon. We kinda have an unhealthy competition going on....hehe. He says I cheat because I can get around the prepay problem. In fact, I think I hold the disputed, (yep, HoardCopperByTheTon disputes it), record for "zincs for gas". More of a novelty than a practical way of zinc disposal. Just try and find a loose-return bank.

Live free or die. Plain and simple.
"If you love wealth more than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, depart from us in peace. We ask not your council or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you. May your chains rest lightly upon you and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen." - Samuel Adams |
