My father-in-law got a sweet deal yesterday. He was at a garage sale and they had 3 whitman folders. He asked waht they wanted for them. The man said .50 each. One had 7 silver quarters the oldest was 1942. The other had one silver quarter, and the last had two V nickels.

Nice thing is he said I would probably end up with them some day.

That was a good find. It still amazes me how little the general populace knows about our old coinage. Do people never read?

"Rich," the Old Man said dreamily, "is not baying after what you can't have. Rich is having the time to do what you want to do. Rich is a little whiskey to drink and some food to eat and a roof over your head and a fish pole and a boat and a gun and a dollar for a box of shells. Rich is not owing any money to anybody, and not spending what you haven't got." Robert Ruark

They have to learn how to read first!

why didn't they spend the quarters, they are worth more then 50 cents, or at least charge the folder for face value?

I try to go to as many garage/yard/estate sales as possible. There are many reasons people just sell things. Usually they consider them as just junk, garbage, etc. At the end of many of those sales the excess is just thrown out. On that program The Antique Raod Show there are many stories of people that found stuff in the garbage that is worth thousands of dollars.
Some people just don't care to spend the time, money, energy to try to find out if something may be worth something. You would be shocked at what I've found at such sales.

Yeah, I go all the time. I also cruise around the night before trash day. Many people throw out whatever don't sell. I got a whole truckload of computer monitors, vacuums, hairdryers etc. from a church sale awhile back. Whatever didn't sell they gave to me because I'd haul it off and they didn't have to mess with it!

Are you throwing that out?

I can't believe that someone would sell $2 face value in quarters for 4 quarters either. Likely, the man never even looked at them before he put them out.

His loss eventually will be my gain.
