Exciting News

There's a newly-discovered variety of the 2008 W Burnished American Silver Eagle. It was posted as an officially recognized major die hub variety on the NGC web site on April 17, 2008. Link below to the report.

These 2008 W Eagles have the reverse of the 2007 W Eagles. There were some subtle changes made to the reverse for the 2008 coins. The difference is most noticable in the U (United States), stars and the tilde at the bottom.

I happened upon this quite by accident as I was checking the NGC web site for the population of a large cent that I acquired. These are so new that the population isn't known. NGC does say that these 2008 W coins will be labeled with the additional line "Reverse of 2007."

This is very interesting and may possibly be an opportunity to get into the early discovery of an important variety. If nothing else, I suspect that more people will now order (or re-order) more of the 2008 W coins from the Mint in hopes of getting the variety. (I believe that I will.)

Here's a link to the NGC article about this newly-discovered variety.

Thanks for that find.

Here's an image of this coin as it'll look in the NGC holder.

Thanks for the update on this. Cool news. Which one is going to be worth more? The 2008 with the 2007 back or the 2008 with the 2008 back. It's kind of weird that the picture the US Mint shows for 2008 silver eagles has the 2007 back, which makes me wonder which one is more common than the other????

Just got my newest issue of Coin World over the weekend. Very interesting to see that this 2008 W ASE thing made the front page. Not yet known how many made with the 2007 reverse, but no doubt it'll be far less than the standard issue 2008 W ones.

Some are already for sale on E-Bay for rather lofty sums and the prices are going up on a daily basis. The MS 70 ones in an NGC holder are already up to $400 or more. MS 69s are about half that price. Of course, once the market figures out the scope of this variety, that could go even higher or plunge to $50-75. Right now, it seems to be a crap shoot.

Most current Grey Sheet says that these coins (even non-graded examples) are going for $250 each in dealer to dealer transactions. Those who are lucky enough to have a few or more of these are certainly in the money now.

This week's Grey Sheet says that they've taken a huge leap to $425. Amazing.
