I am starting a Canadian Buying and Sorting Thread - so we can see the distinctly differant experiance sorting pennies in Canada. I look forward to seeing what other Canadian sorters are finding.

| I just got done sorting the almost $50 of pennies I bought in Buffalo right on the Canadian border. I got close to $3.00 of Canadian pennies and at least $2.50 were all copper (pre-97). I now have over $10 face of pre 97 Canadian pennies with around 70 kings. Who wants them? |

CuproNickle your Canadian king percentage seems really high. 70/1000 = 7% which far exceeds anything we see in Canada, even adjusting for kings over total copper. Before I started actively sorting I rarely saw a king in circulation.
My US copper out of total US penny percentage found in Canada seems really high compared to what I see the US sorters posting here. Perhaps I have just been really lucky so far - more sorting will tell.
1. Commercial sorting operations are not affecting the US in Canada and Canada in US #'s (seems doubtful as they should just pull copper out).
2. Obviously a few pennies sneak across the border both ways, but the older population is not being constantly supplimented by new coins being dropped in to circulation. (seems lik part of the issue, but the new coins move across too)
3. A shiny new penny is likely to be quickly spotted in the wrong country and become harder to circulate. A weathered old penny looks like every other penny even if it is on the wrong side of 49th and is easier to circulate.
4. Perhaps the typical American doesn't pull the old Canadian pennies out because they don't really recognize them as old/interesting/worth saving or collecting. (definately possible)

I think the reason I'm getting so many Kings is because the old penny jars are coming into the banks due to high gas prices. We get huge numbers of Canadian pennies here in Buffalo because of all the Canadian shopper coming over here to escape the taxes up there. I never thought I'd see the day when people were coming to NY (highest taxed state in the USA) to take advantage of our "low" taxes! Everyone is moving away from here because of this.
I just got done counting my Canadian copper, all pre-97. I've been saving them for around 2 years. 903 total 73 Kings large number (maybe 50) of the penny with the bird in flight plus a huge number of early QE pennies. Most of the cents seem older.
I also got a 1943 King nickle in change at the bank over the Winter. My total Canadian change, including quarters, dimes and nickles is around $10.48.

No - all 1967 Canadian Coins got a different image to celebrate Canada's 100th birthday. You must be logged in to see this link.
Penny - Rock Dove (same as any Cu penny) Nickel - Rabbit hopping (.99 Ni) Dime - Macrel fish (Silver value) Quarter - Bobcat/Wildcat (Silver value) 50 cent - Wolf (don't know, never seen one) Dollar - Canada Goose in flight (collector sets, not general circulation as far as I know)
People pull them and save them (even when they first came out) so you do not see them very often in the wild. They were like the westward journey nickels - lots of them, no special value, but they get saved by people. In fact, if someone has a casual "coin collection" of any size they already have some of these.
I am seeing 1967 coins in my sorts, but that is more because of volume (it would take years or a lifetime in normal life to touch the number of coins I have sorted out now). Also I have come across whole rolls of 1967's that have been obviously dumped at a bank and then bought by me. I think some of these bank boxes sit around, even get traded back and forth between banks, but the rolls never cracked open for years until I see them. |

Went to the dentist today, but after the exam they said the hygenist would not be back from lunch for 35 min. So I escaped across the street to a newer RBC branch. As I am standing in line an older gentleman comes in carrying a small fish cooler. He asks if the bank has time to take his coin! The receptionist directs him to a chair to wait for the commercial teller.
I get out of line, go over and say I'm looking for coin - can I buy it off him. So we go to the commercial teller and he cashes the rest of his coin, we make change for my bills and we carry the cooler with $39.50 in pennies and nickels out to my car. Nice guy said he was a stamp collector. His wife extracts all his change and eventually rolls it in plastic holders.
I went back into the commercial teller and wait some more for my coin to come from the vault (5 min delay on the safe). Out comes mint sealed boxes :( At least I got the CWR from the Customer directly! They must have been saving change for some years.
When I bought the coin I could see regular dirty pennies mixed with brilliant pennies through the clear plastic. Sure enough, back home I pulled 3 1/2 rolls of 1999-2006 BU coins so far that are as nice as any I've seen from the mint. I'm thinking that since they have been saving all change, when they got any coin (including brand new) it went directly into a jar, sitting there till now.
Approximate sort ratio for part of this little haul:
BU 1999-2006 3.5 Rolls (would have been dump - maybe sell on ebay?) Canadian Cu 5 Rolls and a few coins Young Qn 60's 0 Rolls and 2 coins US Cu 0 Rolls and 16 coins CDN/US Dump 3 Rolls and 34 coins |

Driveby's on 9 banks (plus a dump bank to pick up cash) in route from lunch to home yielded:
1 QE II 50th Anniversery of Corrination 50 cent coin at face that was just waiting for me to show up and say I collect coins
577 rolls of CWR pennies = 28,850 Pennies 271 rolls CWR nickels = 10,850 Nickel 1 Minty Fresh Box of Nickels 1 Minty Fresh Box of Pennies 1 Minty Fresh Roll of Nickels in one of the blocks
I have now caused a small denomination coin shortage for early next week in the banks that cover about 75,000 people. I only stopped because the banks were all closing for the day, or I could have completely soaked up all the excess coin in the other side of town too. Hopefully next week my first test coin order will come in because this driveby program is pretty slow.
Ok Andy - where is that sorter I ordered? You got the money 30 minutes ago - and the coins now await!!! |

Drivebys today yeilded a few blocks here and there, until a Coast Capital branch that was open late and had just taken the proceeds of a coin drive at a local school. I asked for my standard "two boxes of pennies" Teller says "you want two blocks?" I say, "No, two boxes" She says "what is a box?" "$25 face" "why so many?" "why not? I sell them for fun". She said they can easily give me pennies, so I upped the request to "All". Ended up with over $500 in pennies plus a couple hundred in Nickels :) Such fun! All CWR too.
They could not understand why I would take all that coin. |

Man I would hate to hand sort $500 in pennies. Good thing that Ryedale is on the way.
Nice score.

It was all I could do last night to carry all the coin into the house and stack it into bankers boxes. No time to pop rolls or sort anything. I've got nearly three bankers boxes (file storage boxes) stacked full of pennies waiting now. And I need to pick up my first 10 box penny/10 box nickel pre-order tomorrow! I'm trying to catch Hoardy slowly but surely. |

Had to go to one credit union to sign some documents so picked up $100 in Nickels and $25 in pennies.
Also stopped at what I hope will be my first main source credit union. Learned that the night crew will only bring in 5 boxes max of coin - my 20 box order is special order - special drop :( Does not bode well for free free coin collecting. We might have to resort to "topping up to five boxes" the twice weekly coin order with Nickels. I did grab $100 in Nickels they had sitting in the vault.
CU just called while I am typing this to say my ordered 10 boxes of Nickels and 10 boxes pennies arrived. That will really add to the unsorted stash! |

All the boxes from the order look good. Interesting find though:
Coinage Distribution Inc (CDI) based in Vancouver, with operations in Toronto, Montreal, and other places is a major player in Coin handling in Canada.
In Nickels - I have heard that CDI pulls the pure Ni for the Mint on contract. This is confirmed by previous CDI Nickel boxes and rolls that all contained pretty much Zero .99 Ni coins, and seemed to have fewer of the CuNi ones. I have stopped opening the CDI nickel rolls.
Today I got a CDI-Vancouver Penny box processed on June 2/08. First thing on the drive home I opened the box and broke a number of rolls. Simple observation showed the Canadian Cu and US Cu %ages in the CDI box were quite normal (similar to CWI). So based on this - I would say that CDI is making no effort to pull copper from circulation. Therefore, it would seem the Mint is not pulling copper yet because they would be having CDI do it if they were. |

Opened the boxes that looked good and was confronted with box after box of minty fresh 2008 pennies. Steel happens. Will try throwing them on ebay, I've got enough for my grandkids to be still selling them on ebay when I'm long gone. |

| Hit too banks today and got about $120 worth. But set up a 4 box penny/2 box nickel pickup for tomorrow from one bank that normally sends out excess coin. So hopefully that will bring in some good coins. |

| Visited a few banks to buy coin today. Nothing spectacular and was going to head to lunch, but decided to make one last stop at an HSBC I had not stopped at before. Flashed my client card and asked for all the pennies they could spare. "oh we have some that have been around a long time, let me see how much" After a lot of counting they came back with $250 in CWR pennies plus $200 in CWR Nickels. I declined the two extra mint sealed boxes of pennies which they were really good about. Appearently they did a coin drive for childrens hospital, and had customers bringing in stacks of coin to donate! Got to love those coin drives! |

Shucking pennies for a few hours today-about 8 boxes or so. Grabbing out obvious oddities I found: 3 X UK Pennies 1 X 5 cent Euro (Netherlands) 2 X Barbados 1 cent 1 X Fiji 1 cent A few kings and young queens a couple late date wheats 1 roll and a 1/2 of green and other grungy pennys that are heading back to the bank. Sorting pennies is a very slow way to build an international coin collection |

| Found another UK penny in that batch while running through the Ryedale. Looks like 45-50% copper (both CDN & US), balance in zinc and steel. |

Bought a pile of pennies and a boat load of nickels with normal results, but one bank asked if I could take some dimes off thier hands. I said "sure" in the interest of being a popular coin guy :) So here is a first I can remember in this forum
Sorting results on Canadian Dimes:
$ 219.20 in Canadian Modern $ 5.00 US (no silver) 4 X 5 Pence (UK) and Canadian Silver (hard to believe but true!) one each of: 1945, 1961, 1967, 1968 $225 Total Sorted Not worth the time and effort of sorting for about $3.00 silver profit, but an interesting experiance and 4 new UK coins for my collection. I've previously been skunked on a smaller dime test, so I don't think I'll be repeating this again. |

Saturday buying report from 5 banks and one small coin shop:
180 rolls pennies 200 rolls of nickels 210 George V Nickels 6 international coins
1 uncooperative teller that wanted to save her precious coin for "customers who need it". She also forgot to ask me to enter the weekly draw for a gift card (after spending 5 minutes talking about it to the guy before me). This branch has been unreliable at times before too.
I reduced my request to 1 block each denomination and explained it was not my fault that the bank sold our multi-million dollar commercial mortgage off. I'm going to open an account at another branch on Monday, then make some "rather large" coin deposits to help them alliviate thier evident coin shortages.
