I just went through 2 boxes yesterday that I got at my local Chase bank in Milwaukee. These were recent boxes with a teller stamp of April, 2008, on the bottom. There was a higher than usual % of Cu in them, but the pennies (both Copper and Zinc) had a high percentage of crud coins (being polite).

Some were so badly encrusted with corrosion, oxidation and other assorted foreign substances that I actually threw them in the waste basket. I've never thrown money away before! They looked like they were the victims of some kid's science fair project gone terribly wrong, but I know better. Just couldn't see keeping these in with my other hoard as the white/green/black crud was so thick that it seems certain to "infect" other cents. That's a first for me as I have a reputation for squeezing each Lincoln that passes through my hands before parting with it.

There were 24 of them in total that even I'd be embarrassed to turn back into circulation at my dump bank. All were Memorials except one wheat. Had to take a screwdriver to that one to scrape off the crud because I was curious about the date. It was a 1918 D, but looked like it'd been buried underground for 75 years.

Don't the counters jam up having all of these crud cents run through them at high speeds? What a stinking mess our coinage has become.

Here in Wisconsin, we have some of the highest property and gasoline taxes in the US. We're squeezed so much, I have to make my daughter wear penny boxes for shoes. At least she has an endless supply.

Never thrown away any money. Sometimes they might jam the machines, but that is for the bank workers to worry about. Call me cold....Hehe.

i've got a small bowl of "what the heck am i supposed to do with THESE?" coins... i don't want to risk jamming the counter, because i don't have a lot of free time to cool my heels while the bank messes around with it (the machine at the closest branch has been out of order for three days now).

i should post a picture of a couple of them... they've been damaged to the point that you have to wonder if they still qualify as pennies anymore. i was shocked that one made it through the Brinks machines.

Considering Verizon Business service? Perhaps you'd like to consider a nice drain cleaner enema instead?

About once a year my local coin club has a "Dog of Dogs night" These pennies are great for that!

I never throw them away. I just toss them in the hand roll basket. I don't want to jam up my own machines. I hand roll them with a bunch of normal zincs and swap them out with the pennies that are being sent back to the bank from work.

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

Now selling Copper pennies. 1.6x plus shipping. Limited amounts available.

I bet they were metal detecting finds that got cashed in. I got a box like that once and there were some pretty horrendous looking pennies in it. I cashed them all in anyway figuring if the coins got rejected in the coin counter, oh well, but if not someone else can have them.

My hobby: collecting real money 1 copper cent or nickel at a time.

My vote is with coinhunter's idea.

Yesterday I saw a backhoe parked near a local park and took a drive around the block to see what it had been doing. Sure enough a 1940's era sidewalk and back ally where torn up. It was almost 100* at the time so I waited till 5:30 last night and went back with my metal detector. Found some older clad a 1951 wheatie and another crusted green tinged penny. I have never found a penny that looked that way and it was completly caked up. I figuered INDIAN later I carefully cleaned it and it was a memorial yes it was CU

I threw out 16 cents today. They were so mutilated that it was hard to even see that they were pennies.

But I found 7 dimes in those bad rolls, so I made out good!

I just put them (by hand) inside the next $50 bag I take to my dump bank

Except for several select few that are so badly decomposed that even I am amazed... I figure I will sell those pennies on ebay!

PP

Happy Prospecting!
