Definitely. They're the centennial coin from 1967, so they are unique. The design was made by Alex Colville, the same fellow who designed the other 1967 Confederation coins. The mintage is just under 37 million which is relatively low. They're worth $5 in AU-50 condition. If they're in better shape, MS-60 etc., they're worth around double that. All of the designs on the 1967 coins are beautiful. It's unique to see animal on coinage, but it really suits Canadian coins.
Just an interesting side note, the 1967 rabbits in MS-65 are going for $650.
EDIT: I got that $650 quote from my CHarlton guide, then out of curiosity I checked ebay. There's one for sale now at a massive discount (lol) of C $295. Might be a good investment if anyone wants to grab it. Heck, I just might grab it myself. |

Like many things, rabbit nickels are valued differently by different people and at different times.
On average, I am finding one 1967 rabbit-design nickel for about every 3000 nickels that I sort.
(For comparison, I am finding one 1965 nickel for about every 275 nickels that I sort. 1965 nickels have a mintage of just under 85 million, about 2.3 times that of 1967 nickels.) |

While I agree with the basic premise of what you're saying, there is a definite "book" value for any coin. While it is true that those values rise and fall, the book values are what people in the numismatic business follow.
As stated in my earlier post, the 2010 Charlton standard catalogue (the most respected price catalogue) states the value for a 1967 five cent coin at $5. (same for AU-55 and MS-60)
The price moves up to $8 for MS-60
$12 for MS-63
$15 for MS-64
A whopping $650 for MS-65
$10 for PL-65 (proof like)
$20 for PL-65 HC (heavy cameo)
$25 for SP-65 (specimen)
$175 for SP-67
I would strongly advise anyone who is interested in coin sorting, collecting etc. to buy a Charlton catalogue. It's definitely a worthwhile investment. It includes not only prices for every Canadian coin ever made, but also a grading guide and other info.
You may find prices on the street are lower (sometimes a lot) than the Charlton values. Some people believe the Charlton prices are just too high! I disagree. Just like stocks, there should be a built-in increase in the price based on future value (coins never get any newer over the years) and due diligence (grading and certification). If you find a coin that you've been looking for a much lower price than the Charlton in a definite high grade (certified by ICCS would be best) BUY IT.

My first box of nickels :(
1998 nickels 2000-2010
2 euro 5 cents
The box written "garda of canada" on it and it's from CIBC bank with a stamp "GARDA COIN-MTL JUN 07 2010 OPERATOR #6"
I was afraid of that it was a box straight from the Allow Recovery Program probably and there is 2 euro 5 cents that slipped through the sorter.
I don't get that with hand rolled coins from the bank but i can only get them in very small amount. Sometime i get a machine roll from the bank that have exactly what i found in this box, all coins are new.
May i know where did you get your box and how i can avoid these or a way to identify these box and don't search it ? |

Hi didou. I have one bank that I pick up coins from and another that I dump the new coins back into. It's important to do this, so that you don't pick up the same coins you dropped off, and also to keep the peace with your bank. Also, if you don't have accounts at two completely different banks, you might want to consider opening an account and just leave a few dollars in it just so you can use that bank to dump coins (or use it as the pick up bank.)
I never pick up my boxes at the "regular" tellers. I always walk right up to the business account window and speak directly to the business account tellers. Even though I don't have a business account, they don't mind me picking up boxes of coins (as long as I have a regular account at the bank) It's also good for 2 other reasons: 1- you don't have to wait in line in the regular account line-up and 2- you can develop a relationship with the business account tellers. The people I go to at my pick-up banks know me now. They know what I'm looking for and why I do it. I always tell them exactly what I am doing, looking for old coins. And that way they no longer give me new coins. They always give me the "oldest" looking coins they have. From time to time I bring them a little gift (like chocolates) to thank them for their help. Most of the tellers are amused by it, and some even hold interesting coins for me. Awesome bonus! |

For the last few months, I have been getting a 5 to 10% yields with no special finds, until today.
I think I intercepted a cashed-in collection.
Out of 20 rolls I bought from the bank, only 4 rolls will be returned. A 80% yield !!!
I found the following gems:
