Anyone ever try to pick up cheap governement computer/printer parts for the scrap value? Some of these items are going for $25/pallet.

Any thoughts on what the value for some of these might be worth for scrap value?

Cool site!
I took apart 8 or 9 older computer towers and a couple fax machines/printers/ancient keyboards a few months back. These were all at least 10 years old so they had steel cases and older components with silver and gold plated contacts. I sold the whole lot of pc boards , memory sticks, cpus, hard drive discs, and cables (I think it was something like 42 pounds total) on eBay for a little over $100. Took the rest to the scrapyard and got a couple bucks for the steel, a few bucks for the cast aluminum drive frames (older floppy drives mainly), and I think about $10 for the 50/50 copper wiring I pulled out. In a time to money ratio it probably wasn't that great a deal, but I had fun and it cleared out some much needed space.
New computers are more likely to have more plastic and less steel in the cases, and the components don't have as much gold/silver in them so they probably won't fetch as much on eBay, but it might still be worth a shot. |

| I would never buy computer scrap like this. Look around your local area, most business have to pay 50 cents to 60 cents to dispose of the items as they are hazardous waste. Go to schools, computer repair shops, hospitals, clinics, any small business and ask them if they have old computers that they would like to get rid of for free. The only item that is hard to get rid of and will end up costing you money to get rid of is monitors. |

| If you shop around you can even find places that will take your monitors for free. They ship them on big pallets to China. Check with your local Household Hazardous Waste disposal site and also with some thrift centers in your area. |
If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.
Now selling Copper pennies. 1.6x plus shipping. Limited amounts available. |

China! Most of them send them to poor countries that they want to spread education to, if they are good. |

I thought about doing that but don't you have to collect mass amounts of monitors to attract buyers?
