| Congrats. Wish I could geta box like this. My luck though, the ryedale would shoot them to the zinc side. |

That's twice as nice!
I found a 1919 s yesterday, so I'm going to put it together with the 1909 vdb and hope for the best ;)
The 1919 was in the zinc rejects no less, glad I spotted it since I don't really spend much time resorting the zinc.
When I make finds like this I think I should but I've still got unsorted pennies to work on first.

When I make finds like this I think I should but I've still got unsorted pennies to work on first.....
Here is my opinion:
1) At a minimum, your first pass should be- zinc standard, 50% sensitivity. This will give Zincs that are ready to go back to the back.....and another stream of {Coppers, ALL Wheats, ALL Indians, Foreign, Etc.}. This could go into your hoard and be re-sorted later. Remember....with this method, you only increase your work load by roughly your local copper percentage....probably 15% to 30% more sorting if you then need to re-sort.
I know several big boys that use this method.....it is the only way you will find the valuable older pennies using a Ryedale....it is because the machine is so SENSITIVE/ACCURATE that it rejects the older (pre-WWII) pennies because of their Sn (tin) alloy content.
2) I just use the above first pass method.....than I do nothing but sway the zinc standard for a 1980/81/82 copper standard....then re-run may Copper/Wheat/IH/Foreign/Etc output from sort #1....still leaving the Ryedale at 50% sensitivity......this pulls just the coppers ready for the hoard pile....and leaves everything else.....a very small pile by this time.
3) The small pile of what is left I will rerun at 50% and zinc standard to do some more zinc clean-up from what was missed on run #1.
4) Hand sort what is left....a lot of Older Canadian Copper...some mid 1970's US Coppers....and a bunch of OLDER WHEATS and Indian Heads...and odd Foreign.
The last hand sort is very exciting! This is my reward for the sorting effort. This is when I start thinking 1909 S-VDB!!!!! If anyone is going to find one in circulations - it could be me. At this point I'm sorting through a CONCENTRATE of Good Old Stuff from what I started with.
Example - this past week - sorter $2700 ...that is 270,000 pennies....the concentrate gave me 3 Indian Heads...one was a 1859 Cupro-Nickel 4.3 gram first year Indian Head!....about 200 pre-WWII Wheats...about 10 were under 50 Million Mintage....I have a big can of the more rare coins set aside. I am not even a coin collector....
I bet you could make enough money to pay for a Ryedale by Ebay-ing a year worth of rare coins found using this sort method. Every week I $10 to $20 value in older pennies....based on my casual Ebay price checking....that is $500 - $1000/yr ....that alone would easily cover the cost of the machine... |

| Cessna, it looks like you really got it figured out! I was (still am) a coin collector before I found hoarding, and the biggest obstacle stopping me from getting a rydale now is not having the ability to check for numismatically-valuable coins. You're definantely convincing me that a rydale might not be a bad idea after all. |
