I have found 2 Indian Heads in about 1500 face value of searching. One was an 1864 that was pretty beat up. The other was a 1907 that was in pretty good shape.

Just posting to taunt texcattlerancher, misteroman, and NotABigDeal.

Guess what? Whoohoo.. I found another Indean Head cent today!.. ending a couple month drought. I found it in the first Brinks box I sorted today. Now that is a good way to start off a sorting session. It was in my zinc reject box.. tail sides up. At first I thought it was a foreign coin.. it had been so long since I have seen one.. then I thought "wait a sec, I recognize that wreath and shield" I figured out why I have been going through a drought.. I needed to "just sort more!" It was an 1896.. my oldest so far this year. I need to get one of those Easy buttons to use when I find an Indian instead of the bell.. "That was Easy" That makes 7 Indians so far this year.. should be able to beat last year's total of 9. The same box yielded a 1919 in VF and a 1930 in XF.

Heavy Duty Cart - $45 on eBay.
Ryedale Coin Artist - $659 from Ryedalecoin.com
Brandt 777 Coin conveyor system to feed Ryedale - $400
Glory automatic Coin wrapper - $7300 each
Automatic wrapping paper - 1000 ft rolls - $7 each
Glory or De La Rue high speed coin counter - $4,000 to $25,000 ea
Heavy Duty Compressor to blow out the machines - $350
19 Gallon buckets to put the copper in - $8 each at OSH
Sorting trays to check zinc rejects and refine copper - $1 each
Avery Automatic label peeler for applying custom labels - $250
Aluminum Penny Roll Storage Trays - $5 each
Plastic $25 Penny Storage Trays - $9 each
Canvas Bank Bags to put your refined copper in - $1.10 each
Ohaus digital scale - $89
Heavy Duty Vise to straighten bent pennies - $45 at Sears
Fan to keep you cool while you sort - $25
Halogen duel head Work Light - $29

Finding an Indian Head cent in your zinc rejects - Priceless!

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

Okay, HC, I had to laugh. But, this thread still taunts me, and I'm ignoring you. We're going to start a non-Indian finders club and exclude all you who think Bigfoot and the Lochness Monster exist (you also seem to think Indians can still be found in the wild).

Must be found in a box or bag. I have several, but I have never found one in the "wild".

Which Club Nckt? The members of the Indian finders club are delusional. They still believe in Santa Clause. Deal, Mistero and I are rational thinkers. You want in our club or the other "delusional" one?

It happened again.. Twice!! The first one was heads side up. I knew right away it was an older one because the copper-nickel ones are a slightly different color. I looked closely and it was an 1859!!! This is the oldest one I have ever found and ties me with c140cessna for the oldest penny found. A few minutes later I found another one! This one was heads side up too. It was a 1908 in Fine condition. Slowly I turned it over............

Darn.. no S mint mark!!! I was kind of hoping based on my propinquity to the San Francisco mint that it would be an S mint coin. The 3 I found today bring my total for this year up to 9.. the same as I found last year.

This "delusional" club is more fun! And by the way, Santa Claus does exist.. the "Silver Santa" visited me right before Christmas with all those silver half dollars!

Doing my best to make sure there are no "wild Indians" putting them on my own personal reservation. These 2 were from the 100 rolls of CWR the bank called me to pick up on Tuesday. Doesn't matter if it is Brinks or CWR.. I am finding these mythical Indians everywhere today!

I am headed back out to the penny processing center so I can "just sort more."

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

You can't go Indian huntin tex.. you don't believe.

Besides.. it is not just a luck thing.. it is also a volume thing. You need to go out and buy 24 or 25 boxes at a time.. not just one.

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

Were you peekin in at our Rational Thinkers Only Club thread? I don't have the back for 24 to 25 boxes. But, I will get through 4 or 5 a week. Eventually, if you guys speak without forked tongue, I will find an Indian. But, like Thomas, I will need to see to believe...

tex,

They only show up when you ain't lookin', like leprechauns or ghosts.

Just click your boots together 3 times while holding a 7 oz bottle of Coke in one hand and a postcard of Santa in the other and say...

there are too wild Indians...
there are too wild Indians...
there are too wild Indians...

...and sure as heck one will pop out.

I'm glad that everyone (almost everyone) has gotten some fun out of this thread. I agree with Hoard that you need to believe to find them. I also thank the Man upstairs when I do.

I am not so sure it is strictly a volume thing. I have sorted about $1200 since starting and found three. Two were from Brinks. The third was from a CRW. I believe it was found by someone with a metal detector and accidentaly dumped with his dirty change.

No, it is not strictly a volume thing. It is more of a luck thing. Kind of analagous to sorting half dollar rolls for silver. If you do higher volumes you increase you chance of getting lucky.

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

It happened again last night! This one was an 1881. I figured out why the Rational Thinkers aren't finding any also. Cause I'm getting them all!

Once you get used to seeing them they are easy to spot. This brings my total for this year to 10 little Indians!

hello all

Found my first indian today in the first roll of todays search. It was an 1880 indian head cent in vg condition. I have been sorting by hand since late December 2007, now a little over $1,000 total. I sort both Brinks Boxes and customer hand rolls I get from the bank. Suprisingly my copper % and wheatie % is a little better with Brinks boxes. Average Brinks Box sort is Approximately 20-22% copper, 10-12 wheaties, 2 canadian copper. However customer hand rolls are where the surprises are. Indian head cent, 37 Uncirculated 1963 d pennies in a roll and another roll with 45 wheaties from 1909-1945.
