Ok, I am just a tad bit jealous here. Looking for some help from all you pros.... How do I got about getting coins from banks in bags? Is there a list of certain bank branches that have a policy to allow such athing? Or, Is it just by luck a particular bank will give you them coins in bags? Any help or advice in this matter will be greatly appreciated by me and probably most of members in this forum. Thx in advance, Andy

| Good question, but keep in mind that if there are others pulling copper out of circulation and dumping zincs back into the coin counters, then your percentages could be really low. |
My hobby: collecting real money 1 copper cent or nickel at a time.

"How do you get coins from banks in bags?"
Just ask!!!
Tell them you collect wheats and you go through a lot pennies and that you prefer them in bags it saves you the work of unrolling them and it saves them the time and expense to roll them up. So again just ask. Some banks will sell you bags and others won't. |
COPPER - the "poormans" precious metal!!!
SELLING - $100.00 face copper shipped to you for $189.00 machine rolled or bagged - PM me if your interested. |

There is a list.. but it is a secret list. It is the same list that tells you which bank branches will order you 24 boxes or more at a time with no charge and lists all branches of every bank that either take pennies loose in bags for deposit or have a free coin counter.
Most of the folks on this board are pretty nice.. but do you really think if another hoarder lived near you and knew where to get these bags of manna they would tell you so you could scoop them on their supply? |

You just may have to get on the phone and first find out if any local banks have counters. Develope a relationship with that bank and then see if they will sell bags. Thats what I did. My CU branch does not have a counter but their main branch does and the main branch gets in a lot of cents. They call me sometimes when they have bags to go.

I lucked into two banks that will sell me bags last week. The one has a counter and says that some lady is bringing in her Dads pennies. Apparently he had pails and pails of them. The teller said that they ship to the Fed on Thursdays and if I call ahead they will save me for them.

I thought of giving them my number. However, I do not have and account there and thought that giving them a # from two areas cows away might blow my cover. I called them today. They are holding one bag for me and might have more by Friday. If that works out, I will probably open an account.

I asked at my bank and it backfired.
I noticed a Brink's guy carrying out many bags of unrolled pennies, so I inquired about getting some. Sure, the teller wrote down my name and said they would call me when they got some. That Friday they actually called, but what they had was two bags of rolled pennies. Well, I took them without complaining. A week later I went back and asked for some pennies and the teller informed me "We know you want pennies and we'll call you when we get some." Another week went by and they finally called - they had $50 in a bag, rolled. |
A penny sorted is a penny earned!

| All this talk about bags of pennies got me thinking about asking for loose coins versus rolls. What I do now is get boxes of rolls from one bank that uses I think a company is called Dumas as a carrier. Originally I got pennies from a different bank that used Brinks as a carrier. I had a problem that whoever was rolling for Brink because after getting several $250 plus dollar rounds with no copper enclosed from Brinks boxes and from different banks that uses Brinks I figured someone was pulling out the copper. I think I was probably one of the first to report this on the board a few months ago. Regardless, I have a dump bank that takes loose coins I bag with my counter and they even give me the plastic bag to put them in! I was originally using canvas bags I got but now that want plastic. Oh well, there went the environment, hehehe. |

| Just called the bank I get my coins from and they only give them out in rolls versus loose. Darn, that would have saved me a ton of work! A nice thought. |

Saul.. At least you are getting bags of pennies. If they are rolled, that is fine too. Some banks have the option of sending the coin in either rolled or loose.. depends on the arrangement thay have with their coin processor. Sometimes it is the same price, sometimes they have to pay a premium if they send it in still rolled. Obviously we would all prefer to get pennies loose in the bag, but as long as you can get a bag or 2 of pennies take them whatever way they want to give them to you. That way you will always be their go to guy when they have pennies to get rid of.
Copper Catcher.. Don't give up on those Brinks banks. I experienced the same thing from 3 of my banks.. including one $600 order, but now all 3 banks are giving me normal boxes again. Go back and try them with a small order to test the waters again. That is a good deal that they provide you the bags to dispose of your zinc in.. I have the same deal. Those bags would cost you about 55 cents each if you had to buy them yourself. |

HoardCopperByThe Ton that is good to know! I'll do a test and order a few boxes from my bump bank that gets Brinks boxes.
Question: Has anyone found a good way to cracking open the paper rolls without spraying the coins all over creation and without busting your knuckles? I'm currently popping them open on the corner of a plastic pail. Just wondering!!! |

You just gotta keep from getting your knuckles in between the roll and whatever you are whacking it on. I used to whack them on the inside corner of a kitty litter pail. That way if I whacked them too hard they would fly into the bucket instead of all over. You can't whack them on regular desks or furniture.. it will beat the heck out of it. Now I whack them on the edge of my workbench that most of my coin machines are on. It is 1/4" plate steel so it works really well. The trick is to just hold them like an egg and crack them on the edge the same way you would crack an egg.. that way you won't rap your knucklss. |

| You realize that eventually the US Mint will be contacting the group and telling us we all need to stop. Well maybe not. But honestly I can see eventually the banks limited the number you can get. Or worst yet after the anniversary of 2009 penny they will discontinue the cent. A very likely possibility! |

They will discontinue the Penny after the 2009 anniversary is a prediction I have made before. I think they will do away with the Penny in 2010 or 2011. And I hope they do, by that time I will have enough tons put away, and the price will go much higher. |
