I went to a new bank today to get some more pennies. I asked if I could buy a $50.00 bag of loose pennies from the sorter. The teller got the mananger and the manager said sure, I have trouble getting rid of the darn things. So I aksed her if she had more she wanted to get rid of, and she got really excited. She asked if I was serious and I told her I would buy all that she had. Ended up being $600.00 total in loose bags. Not bad for a small branch bank on a drive by.

The first $50.00 bag I have sorted through is really interesting. 90% copper with a large amount of pre 1980 canadians (I'm in Minnesota). They are definately well searched through. There wasn't a single wheat in the bag, with the bulk of the pennies being from 1960-1977. The 10% zincs are mostly 1983's to 1985's. It's like someone bought pennies from the bank, pulled out the wheats, and then brought them back once upon a time.

I've dumped a bunch of the other bags in bins to see if they would have the same phenomeon, but they are a lot better mixed. More zincs, newer candians, wheats etc. Looks like they will be more around my 28% average. Anyone else have a strange find from a driveby?

I am hesitant on buying bags from the bank because there is always the possibility that you are getting someone's rejects. It sounds like you did very well though, despite not getting any wheat cents.

My hobby: collecting real money 1 copper cent or nickel at a time.

Great find, even if they were wheat depleted.
