Its obvious that no one is going to get rich by sorting...so why do you sort?
I sort for several reasons...I feel like I'm searching for treasure, I like finding under-valued assets, I always have so much on my mind and this clears it, and I like feeling productive (I'm a law student about to graduate and cannot find a job).
I don't know if I necessarily buy the WTSHTF rationale for hoarding ...even if the sh!t totally does hit the fan, I don't think they'll be a functional economy in which to spend copper, silver, or gold for that matter.

I agree about not getting rich by sorting, but it does provide a low-cost, near zero risk opportunty to create wealth in my home with minimal effort.
And while I don't know about the economy undergoing a total collapse, I do think that with the inevitable increase in inflation the copper will become more valuable over time, hopefully faster than paper money sitting in a savings accout will earn interest.
When I can get a nickel for a copper penny as easy as I can now get a dollar for a silver dime I know it'll be time to start selling my hoard to help pay off my mortgage.
For now though my short-term goal is getting a ton of copper, at which point I will have to start selling some to continue financing any further major penny purchases.
I'm closing in on 500 lbs, so a ton isn't too far off.

I am trying to save a little money.
I hope that the value of the coins I have will hold as the dollar falls. |

I sort because I know what happened to 90% silver coins after 1963. No one got rich in 64, but a lot of people kicked themselves in the a$$ in 1980 for not hoarding when they could. |

Reminds me of days gone by when my Dad, Brother and I would sort through bags on the dining room table. Mind you, these were the days when there were just a few year's production of Memorial Cents in circulation (circa 1959-63) and everything else was wheats. Those were fun times and we'd yell out our extraordinary finds with the same excitement as if someone handed us a million dollars.
Mint marked pennies from the teens and twenties were fairly common and there were usually a few Indians in every bag just to encourage us to look for more. Never found an 09S VDB, but snagged all of the rest.
One thing is constant, though, my hands get just as dirty now as they did 50 years ago when I hand sort. |
Here in Wisconsin, we have some of the highest property and gasoline taxes in the US. We're squeezed so much, I have to make my daughter wear penny boxes for shoes. At least she has an endless supply. |

1. It beats watching that steaming colon-loaf coming out of the TV. (stole that one from Art). 2. 250%+ ROI, no risk 3. Like to do it while listening to Savage on the radio, over the Internet. 4. I started last year again after a hiatus of many years. I just bought a few rolls of pennies and nickels every so often--it was just play really. Then, in May, the Canadian Mint announced its alloy recovery program, by which it would remove all coins (so they claimed) of nickel or copper (or their alloys) from circulation. Then I realized it was now or never, and I have been buying furiously ever since. |

I started to get into the game before another 1964 happens. It also makes me feel better and more secure to have money with a real value as opposed to our failing fiat currency. Sorting gives me something to do with the time I would usually spend surfing the internet or watching pointless TV shows. Most of all, I just love the thrill of the hunt coin collecting (and now hoarding) brings! |

I agree with others comments, I think years down the road copper will be the next silver. Sure it takes up more room to store and is more work to sort than silver but at 10X face it will be worth it. There are a lot of people looking for silver now that wish they had taken it out of circulation when they could have gotten it for face value. And I bet back in the late 60'S and early 70'S there were a lot of people telling the people that were hoarding silver from circulation that they were nuts. Just what people are telling me now. |

I think:
1. The dollar will continue to fall. 2. Copper prices will climb (at LEAST by as much as the dollar falls). 3. No risk (this is a biggie......how many other investments can claim ZERO risk???) 4. It is a little bit of a treasure hunt (what just fell out of the Ryedale?) 5. It is educational. I get to explain to my kids history, economics, metalurgy sp?,geography.

when i was little I tried to collect some books. I couldn't because I couldn't go through enough pennies. I can go through enough now :).
I sort by eye mostly looking for the coins I need (only 1930s back now other than proofs) and errors. I save the coppers because it is easy to have another pile. I just roll them up and save those $25 boxes.
If I finish my penny books, then I will move on to something else. What is the chance of me finding all the key dates? I bet the 1856 Flying Eagle is the hardest to find in the wild!

1) I like the thrill of the hunt and do enjoy finding wheat cents 2) It's more of a hobby than anything and helps me make my free time more productive 3) It's nice to know I have money that is backed by metal 4) There is a low up front investment with a potential for a nice return 5) Even though I have plenty of Indian cents, I am waiting for that day when I find my first one in a roll or box 6) I agree with others that think these could be traded down the road like junk silver coins are today |

Most of the reasons already mentioned... i like the "treasure hunt" factor, i think buying an inherently valuable commodity at 1/3rd of its market price is about as good a deal as you're going to find, and hand-sorting meshes well with my OCD :) |

For me: 1. Love the thrill of the hunt. Absolutely love finding '09 - '29 wheats cents and Indians of course (only 1 so far), '30s are ok. 2. My goal is to stash a nice quantity of 40s and 50s wheat cent bricks - getting close to stashing my first wheat brick. I think these really have the potential to be worth 10X quickly as they become more scarce. 3. I also hoard the coppers as well, but I sell some off to be able to continue my wheat extraction and stash goals. 4. Mint errors are fun to find.I have some pictures on the wall in my work area of the 55 dd, 72 dd, 69S, etc. I have found a blank zinc planchet recently and a uniface strike error as well.
My buddy is a member of the ANA and so he sends some stuff in from time to time to be graded and includes my stuff as well.

Coinhunter's post sums it up nicely for me. I do watch TV on occasion when sorting. I feel sorting makes my non-income producing time more productive. |

Hmmm.. you mean we have to have a reason? This might call for some reflection.
Plato said "A life which is unexamined is not worth living." Of course he probably stole that line from Socrates.
I sort for many of the same reasons listed by others here. The thrill of the hunt. The challenge of obtaining large amounts of unsearched coin and getting rid of zincs. Finding wheat cents to add to the hoard, and even finding an occasional Indian cent. A hobby that actually provides a positive return. Getting copper at less than half price. The true hoarding mentality.. Having lots of something! If you are going to hoard something, it might as well be something good.
And one other important reason that I have not seen mentioned here yet. The fun of sharing stories and experiences with fellow members here. Sort of a sense of community. It is nice to share with others that have a similar outlook and can undertand what the whole sorting thing is all about. |

1. It's a treasure hunt every tme you get a roll. 2. No risk with the coins, but the equipment has been very costly for me. 3. You can make money on it. Look at what MaDeuce did - Probably made $200,000 or more in his Nickel venture in Canada. 4. Very educational. 5. Something to do. |

I used to buy scrap sterling for about half the spot price, but it's hard to find scrap sterling any more. I sold most of it to a refiner and I'm still hoarding the rest. I sold a lot of it last month for a little less than twice what I paid and I expect to double my money on what I am holding. The trouble with silver is that there are some heart stopping swings while you wait for it to rise significantly. I might ship when the price is high and then it drops before the refiner gets it. I also hold bullion, waiting for a huge rise which happens about every two years. It takes a huge rise to pay for the premium on bullion.
Now I have discovered pennies. I double my money instantly, and there is a good chance it can double again in a couple of years, so it looks twice as good as silver. |
