I read that post as if the lady were exuberantly hurling the cents into the air and calling all who could hear, "come hither and gather these pieces of copper as they fall from the sky"
Then I realized it was more of disgust as she said "Pennies".......

This is why the average person won't be sorting copper out of pennies any time soon.

Gotta love the USA, where money is so cheap people throw it away.

And where even many "poor" people are obese, drive nice cars, have air conditioning, big screen TV's and so on.

The thing that sucks, is that we as working stiffs support their lifestyles. Easier to have kids and stay home and get paid than it is to work....Good 'ole U.S. of A.

Something wrong in the head of someone who would do something like that. People who are in debt up to their necks will refuse pennies as a false social statement that they are well to do. Come the end of the month she may be raiding her kids piggy bank to make her car payment. I don't think many real wealthy persons would do what she did.

What happened to you is more proof that the economy is going to take a big hit soon. I bet she will be one of the first to go down.

I read the post as if she knew about your hoarding and she threw them at you or threw them down and yelled out to get your attention...lol.

My hobby: collecting real money 1 copper cent or nickel at a time.

This is the God's honest truth. In the mid 1990's, when NASCAR was in Delaware for the Dover race, they had Jeff Gordon's Dupont car on display (a backup car I guess) outside the Hotel DuPont in Wilmington. Some team guys where there answering questions for fans and passers-by. A man pulled up in, (I kid you not) a Chevette! He parks, and comes over to look at the car. He's wearing a tweed coat, the type with the leather patches on the elbows, it is VERY worn.

The guy approaches the car, and starts asking questions - commenting on how nice the paint looks, etc. The NASCAR guys nod and smile, but basically show mildly restrained contempt for someone they thought was some eccentric kook. I'm from the area, and knew better, the man was a DuPont, in fact, he was the chairman of the DuPont Co.....

And I can say without a doubt, he doesn't throw pennies on the ground!

Someone's bag of coins burst (I'm assuming) on the way into the grocery store where there's a Coinstar machine. There was change all over the sidewalk and NO ONE would stop to pick up any of it. There were quarters in there, too. We cruised on up in the fire lane and picked it all up, almost $10! This was in the pre-hoarding days, so I didn't do a check for coppers.

But that is so strange that the woman would toss her pennies on the ground in the first place, much less yell out "Pennies!"

topeka, are you developing a reputation around town?

Yesterday I came across a bunch of change just lying in the grass and gutter mixed in with alot of cigarette butts next to the curb. It looked as if someone dumped out a car ashtray as they drove off. Not a great copper haul (only 8 cents), but I walked away with an extra $3.47 in ash covered change.

We had a local coin show recently(3 weeks ago)...
I was walking out and there were these copper tokens all over the ground.... I didn't know them very well at that time, but they turned out to be the Mint tokens struck on penny planchets... P and D mints. About 30 of them. I stood on guard so that the passing cars wouldn't run them over, and then their owner came out and said they had fallen and he'd left them for whoever....
So I picked them up!!!!

Anyone have an interest in these? Still in their mint cellophane square... I thought of salting them into rolls of cents. But I checked on ebay and saw they carry and nice little premium.

Not as cool as the busted bag, but it made my day! (unfortunately, they were zinc, not 95% copper)

The kids in this area will buy rolls of cents to "snap." They put them between their thumb and finger, when you snap your fingers in a game to see how far and how acurate they can be. They rarely pick them up after they have snaped them. Some kids get pretty good too.

I find change at the bus stops and next to the parking meters downtown by where I live almost every day. Then not 50-100 foot from there there will always be people asking if you can spare change.

Yea, I definately thought she was mocking you and basically saying look at this crazy man who sorts pennies, he'll go after these ones I throw on the ground.
