I found a 1909 vdb last night and got all excited because I though it was super valuable. I then discovered that apparently only the "S" ones are worth a lot. A good find nonetheless. Later, from the same box I found an entire roll of dimes. This box is certainly paying off!
This brings up a question for discussion - what is the most valuable coin or most valuable combination of coins that you found in a box of pennies?

I found a 1999 wide AM error cent in a box about a year ago. According to the red book, I could sell it for $500 - but im keeping this coin. |

I found a 2000 AM wide last night. Not worth any where near the value of the 1999 though.

I recieved a customer wrapped roll that had 21 steel cents in there. A few were ugly/rusted, but most were 'decent' with minimal or no rust. Not sure what they are worth, but more than a couple dollars I'd guess! |

I hand sort for that reason. I have a homemade sorter that I use some, but I try to pull out zincs that are in good shape too. anything 2000 and back. The zinc cents don't stand up to well, so I think ones in good shape might be worth something some day.
