There are actually folks selling them on ebay. I was one of the main guys doing that as far back as about 9 years ago. My bags were truly unsearched. I assumed there would be nothing good in there so it was not worth my time to search them. For the most part I was right. Then one guy found a 1909 S VDB in one of my bags! This is once out of about 300 bags so the odds were really long. I was actually happy for him. He was a repeat customer. I was also a little sad, since that was the one hole in my collection. Last year I was making up a bag.. running the coins through the counter and I had picked up this little baggie of wheat cents from one of my bookshelves. I had poured them out on my desk and was just getting ready to toss them in the counter with the other unsearched wheat cents but something told me to take a look first. See, I had been having a really lucky night. I had won a flat screen TV at the company safety dinner earlier and had found a 1912-S in VF in a customer wrapped roll after dinner. I looked at a few and then picked one up and saw 1909-S! I thought Wow, this really is my lucky night.. that's a hundred dollar coin. Slowly.. I turned it over.. not even daring to hope.. and YES! there was VDB!!! The coin graded XF. Some dealers tried to buy it from me at the next coin show but I wouldn't sell it even for full retail of $1200. It means too much to me that I actually found it rather than just bought it. I had been looking at that hole in my album for 35 years! And to think I almost just tossed them in the next back of wheat cents I was about to send out. I don't know where I bought that little ziplock baggie of wheat cents or whether it had been sitting on that shelf for 3 months or 3 years.. but I think I probably paid about 3 cents each for those wheat cents. I don't normally sell many wheat cents now.. I prefer to buy them and add them to the hoard.. but I was thinking I might throw a bag up on eBay starting at 9 cents with no reserve and maybe have another contest for an Indian Penny where forum members guess what the closing price will be.

If I were to ever sell wheats on eBay, they would truly be unsearched, as I don't really know what to look for. I just save the "shiny" red ones. The buyer would get all brown wheats, but there could truly be errors, etc. Right now, I just trade them in at $0.03 a piece to my primary coin dealer (he says he doesn't even have the time to search them).

No there are no "UNSEARCHED BAGS". Think about it the fact that they are separated from circulation means they are searched. And most bags have been sold from one person to another over the years, so along the way they get searched again. When people say "unsearched" bag they mean it has been "unsearched" by THEM. And as many "unsearched" bags I have gotten off of Ebay that were supposed to be "unsearched" and only had common dates from the 40's and 50's in them I know people are stretching the truth when they say "unsearched". Yeah it might be "unsearched" by THEM but I think their wife or brother searched the bag. But as long as people continue to fall for this there will always be "UNSEARCHED" bags on Ebay.

I think you stand a better chance of finding a rare coin in circulation.

even at estate sales the wheats are usually searched through by the auction company.

check out the other items of sellers selling "unsearched" bags. there you will be able to buy all the rarer dates they've already picked out!!

That's like me selling my bags of zinc cents saying they weren't searched for coppers.

That is the truth! In all seriousness, I have found more semi and key dates in circulation than in bags of 5000 "unsearched" 40's and 50's.

yea i don't see how those people didn't look through them. I know I would have, but I wouldn't have called them unsearched.

I have bought some wheats on ebay. No key dates, but I am still missing a lot of coins in my books, so they helped me out. That 1909-1940 is hard to fill from roll hunting.

I've sold unsearched bags of wheats before, but when I buy, I assume they're all searched.

Actually, where I live, I have a dealer near me who actually sells unsearched bags of wheat cents. Technically, they aren't in bags, but he finds them and sticks them in a giant box for me. The other week, I bought $300 worth and haven't had the time to search them all yet, but there are many earlies and mixed mints. I have found about 20 09's some with VDB and a 22D along with some other better date coins. And before you ask, NO I'm not telling you where I get mine!

He puts them in a giant vodka box. Maybe you would want some of that too?

I was all for your idea misteroman.. until I saw that you wanted to cut me out.

Don't need the vodka either. Bought some pennies in a wine bottle from a homeless guy on Friday.. while it may have been socially concious, it certainly was not one of my better ideas.

Did the homeless guy have any copper for you?

Yeah.. but it was so bad looking I rolled it up by hand with the zinc to get rid of it. I didn't want to jam any more of my machines.

We can achieve parity through me selling off a few spare bags rather than you needing to get any. I am trying to save you money.. I am nice like that.
