the other night I noticed an odd 1971-D penny.

Rejected as Copper Keep
Rejected as a zink keep
put in another 1971-D as the target coin and still rejected.

I believe it is a very rare alloy probably pulled out of a top secret vault deep inside area 51.

I am so lucky!

All kidding aside... any suggestions?

Happy Prospecting!

(X-Files theme music)

Maybe it's memory metal - try bending it in half, then drop it in hot water

Wild idea here, in 1974 they made 1.5 milion aluminum cents for an experiment. Could it be aluminum?

It is for sure 1971 D

Aluminum???? hmmmm! only of it was copper plated like the Zinks are.... it looks copper!

as much as I would love it to be aluminum I am believing that the mint just had some crap copper supplier! in 1971.

1. Weigh it
2. Check it with a magnet
3. See if it's bent

If none of those items yield unusual results, it's just like many others we have seen from the 1970's that don't sort as they should in the Ryedale.

If it doesn't weigh any different then it most likely is not a different metal as the specific gravity is different on all metals.

I was serious about weighing it; getting an accurate electronic or manual reading. If it doesn't match a zinc's or a copper's weight, then you know you're on to something.

I'm not sure of the aluminum cents were copper plated or not. The book just says that they made them.

The aluminum cents are just aluminum, not plated. They are only dated 1974, and are technically illegal to own (unless you're the Smithsonian).

Judd claims bronze-clad steel cents were made. Also, Nonsense description trial strikings of various compositions.
