I am a cashier and large amounts of coins go through my hands.
Silver quarters and dimes are easy to hear, but do nickels have that "silver ring" like their 10 and 25 cent counterparts?

I dont know about a sound but I think visually they stand out pretty easy. Sure I have pick up some that were not silver but not that many.

I tried a sound test with a few war and regular nickels and to me they all sounded the same.

Warnix have a look all their own. Most are heavily circulated and have a grayish look to them. Rather unappealing, actually, but there's treasure in the special alloy. When in doubt, look on the reverse about the dome for the huge mint mark. Good luck finding them. I was averaging 1-2 for each $100 box of reg nix, but am now in a drought for the past few.

Here in Wisconsin, we have some of the highest property and gasoline taxes in the US. We're squeezed so much, I have to make my daughter wear penny boxes for shoes. At least she has an endless supply.

Ok now we Canadians have to be jealous of your silver war nickels. Ours were made of chrome-plated steel (except for early WWII when they were tombac).

SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO I looked at a nickel that my dad had recently placed in his change jar and it is a 1942....But there is no huge mint mark on the back?
Did all '42s have silver? Or did they add the silver at a later point in the year?

They made both in 1942.

No big mint mark means no silver.

`Everybody is ignorant. Only on different subjects.' Will Rogers

"This is the shabby secret of the welfare statists' tirades against gold. Deficit spending is simply a scheme for the "hidden" confiscation of wealth. Gold stands in the way of this insidious process. It stands as a protector of property rights. If one grasps this, one has no difficulty in understanding the statists' antagonism toward the gold standard." Alan Greenspan, 1966.
