Wow, glad my car isn't running on copper!

I think it is slightly less than a ton. As you fill a 55 gallon barrel I doubt you will be shaking it to get all the loose coins to settle properly. I figure 5000 coins per gallon so would estimate a 55 gallon drum at 275,000 coins.. 5 bags short of a ton.

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

I happen to have some plastic 55 gallon containers that my rocks came in.

Maybe if I get too many tidy cat pails to keep in the house I can go with one of those.

Of course they are outside in my shed, but it's not as if anyone is going to walk off with it.

But what are you going to do with the rocks? Remember to use the right count from the kitty litter pails to do the calculation.

I saw a 55 gallon drum of pennies for sale on e-bay about 10 years ago. It was full of wheats but they all had some corrosion from getting wet. The drum sold for less than the freight if I remember correctly.

TxTim,

I'm glad you mentioned that. I live in a northern state and my drum is in a shop that is not heated. It can be 95 and humid in the summer and -20 in the winter. Is this a problem as far as condensation or anything? I have the cover on the drum.

The drum I saw was steel. I would think you need to move it to a dry, climate controlled area. If you use a steel drum without a liner you will get some galvanic corrosion going.
If you store them in a plastic container that gets opened and close a lot, you will get a lot of moisture in there- also bad.
Good luck!

Not if they are stored dry. Moisture will get the corrosion train rolling.

If you're storing them in a large drum or other container that is not climate-controlled, it may be worth your while to get something like the "goldenrod" or other compact electric dehumidifier... i know that sporting-goods stores sell them to protect guns in safes, should work on copper as well.

Considering Verizon Business service? Perhaps you'd like to consider a nice drain cleaner enema instead?
