I've never gotten a whole role of wheats in the cents that I buy myself to sort but strangely enough, three different times now I have broken open a roll at work and found that they were all wheats. One time they were actually all steel cents. I definately bought every one of the rolls too. 50 cents for 50 wheats isn't a bad price as far as I'm concerned. One roll had a 1915 in it in decent shape too.

Beave, From what I've read, you are not the first....I'm sure you can guess the basic scenario on how it happens..
But you ARE among a tiny elite!!! 95% of us will never have such fortune occur. Coures, following HCBTT's advice....just open more rolls!!!! :)
Where they Customer wrapped rolls or machine/brinks or NF STring rolls?
Congrats! |

Yes, it has happened a couple of times once 3 rolls and once almost 4. I always try to get hand wrapped rolls at banks. |

I got about $16 of pure wheats about three weeks ago. Two of the rolls were pure steel. The girl at the bank said some guy dumped a whole ton and since the wrappers looked old they gave them to me. No Indians, but a ton of teens and 20's, and three 1909. I was happy. |

They were customer wrapped rolls that we bought from the bank. I checked a few other rolls every time I found one hoping maybe someone rolled up a bunch and we got them but I was never that lucky. I have gotten a few good finds out of the cash register in the three years that I have worked there though.
My grandma has quite the collection of old coins since she worked at a bank way back when. She retired in the early 80s. She has envolopes full of silver certificates, not to mention several coins from the 1800s. |

I just found my first 3 rolls of Mostly wheats. A few 1929's, mostly from the 40's though. One roll only had two non-zincs, the other two were about 45%. These were hand rolled from the bank! |

I got three rolls of wheats from a bank a while back. The rolls were hand rolled and marked by date, they were obviously part of someones collection.
I guess as times get tough more people will start cashing in their collections. |

I think my record is a wimpy 5 wheats in a roll...found last night. My record for a box is 43, second most is 31 (last night). I would love to find a roll's worth in one box let alone a single roll! |

It happened to me early last year. Two rolls of wheats and Indians. Nothing later than 1943. A few 1909's, a 1931-s, a 1909-s in XF, a handful of Indians, two AU steelies, and just about every semi-key date. No doubt part of someone's collection, and no doubt the single best day I've ever had coin roll hunting.
Except for the 1909-s vdb, I've found every wheat penny---thanks to those two rolls. |

Now I'm jealous.
Here I've been sorting for almost two whole months and I haven't found a single Indian Head, much less an entire roll of wheats.
And today I got 24 boxes of zinc! Brand new 2008's at that worse the luck.
Guess I haven't paid my dues yet ;) |

Don't feel too bad. I haven't found one in over 6 months. |

I came across a few all copper rolls the other day, customer rolled. They all had at least 5 wheats in each of them and no zinc to be found. Somebody rolled up an old penny jar and I got the pennies. I wasn't even a little mad. |

A few weeks ago I got 44 rolls of wheats. The teller had been saving them for me for a week. When she sold them to me she said "they are old" (most were in the 40s & 50s) The next day I go to another branch of the same bank and my teller there says she was saving some for me and she said "they are old" only 4 rolls, but not complaining. |

I'm BAD. I called her up, thanked her, and asked if that customer brought in other rolls of coins because I wanted to buy all of them. Sadly that was all he/she brought in. |

pulled 96 wheats out of my last box. best was 20 in a roll. sad thing is they are all culls. either green white color or just dirty looking like pond pennies get. theres also 20 or so that are in XF or AU but they are all black. i mean full wheat stalks, lots of ear and bowtie detail but real dark brown colored almost black. anyone know what causes that?? |

aAout 2 ears ago I bought a brinks sealed box. I then had to go straight from the bank to my job and open the store I worked at. I went into my office and opened the box. These were the paper machine wrapped rolls where you can see the cents on one end. Immediately visible 10 or more wheats.
I don't remember the exact counts but it was over 75% Wheats, around 2000 of them. The rest were brand new zincs. I was unable to close my store and go back. The next time I was able to go back to the bank was the next day. I got same type of box but no wheats this time, not even one.

I forgot to add that since that time 2 years I have found less than 20 total wheats throughout all my searching. I average at about 1 wheaty/month or about 5 per box or less.
However I have found a 1909 VDB in uncirculated condition with all the original mint luster. It is not as valuable as a 1909 S VDB, but is still a superior find, mine could be sold to a coin dealer for about $30.00, but it is a nice memory, so I keep it for now. |
