Hello, I am new to this forum. Well not really, I have been a "lurker" on this forum for a few months now but i have never wanted to sign up. Well i did sign up today, because i found a special coin. Well let me get started on how i got interested in penny sorting. It was around Christmas when my mom got me a coin magazine. While flipping throught it it talked about hot pennies before 1982 are worth more then face value, at the time nickels were too. Well I decided to try this out but qall the Banks were closed because is was Christmas time so I had to wait. I did and while i waited i checked this site out and others and decided that i would give halve dollars a try before i tried pennies. My first box i got 3 40%ers so i was going to do it again. I go to another bank and they had $440 worth so i buy them all. I get home and i had like 15 walking liberties, 34 Franklins, and 16 1964 Kennidies also 15ish 40%ers. Now i was hooked, but i tried again 3 times and got nothing so i decided to do pennies. That puts us about 1.5 months ago. I had my mom buy me a few boxes on the way home from work and i sorted them and got decent finds. (At that time i had a horrible sorting method and it took me probably 3 hours to sort a box.) I bought more later and got the bright idea to re-roll my keepers so that i would not have to put them in Dixie cups of 50 or 100 each. After that which was about 2 weeks ago i decided to do more per week and so far i have 2 boxes full of copper cents. Well today i went to a bank about a half mile away and i asked to buy a box, a bag, or both. They said are you a customer and My mom said yes since she has a "Chase Card". He looked, and he only had about half a box so he went to 2 other tellers and got their pennies. He got $25 worth in pennies so i paid him and as i was taking them i asked him if he had ever seen an Indian head pennie before. He said no, so i picked up a roll in about the center and said theres one! I took it out for him and he couldnt really see it thought because it is green. I looked hard and found the date, 1890! That is the oldest coin i have ever found in circulation.
So yea you read my life story but i have read all of yours so were even.
Good luck sorting,
Copperpennies

Great story copperpennies. Congrats on finding all those silver halves. Also congrats on finding the Indian head penny. That makes you part of a special group here. There are still plenty of sorters here that have not found an Indian yet. |

That's right. I sent him one for Christmas just so he would know what they look like, but he doesn't think that one counts since he found it in the mail.. LOL |

Hello and welcome copperpennies.
I think I saw on another thread that you are still in middle school, if so it's wonderful to see another young person wanting to learn about money.
Good find with the Indian Head, and with the silver half's. One of these day's I'm going to have to buy some of those... |

The first thing I found was a lincoln facing JFK. I told the tellers im looking for things like this and that it is only worth about a buck. I dont want them to become copper hoarders or coin collecters. :D. |
