I bought a bag of loose rolls from the bank next to my office. It was about half & half of bank roll(I think they're referred to as the shotgun type) and customer rolls.
Everything was fine with the bank rolls, the usual ratio of copper/zinc/Canadian/'82's and wheats. I broke into the customer rolls and found nothing but gorped up green, or gray and off white pennies. They were so badly gunked up I can't make out the year, and some of them if they're even Lincolns or even U.S. pennies. 8 rolls were about 80%-90% of these things.
I also got 5 slugs made of epoxied together pennies, a German 2 Pennig piece, a Jamaican 25 cent piece and 3 bent coins so they take up more space in the roll. I also got 37 Canadians from 1 roll. If it wasn't green it was Canadian.
On the plus side there were also 2 dimes in the mess...

We all get a few of those types now and then. You are OK on the Canadians.. they are copper through 1996 and the Canadian dollar is stronger than the US dollar right now. The bent ones you can just put in a vise and straighten. The green ones are most likely from the bottom of some wishing well or fountain.. I call them "pond pennies" or Irish pennies. I bet the dimes came out of the same fountain. |
If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

Congratulations! You win the ugliest penny roll prize!
I had started a thread about doing exactly this, putting together a roll of the greenest, dirtiest, most corroded, bent, and stickiest pennies I could find, just to be mean.
I promise I never followed through on it though! |

I found a button the other day amongst a roll with other undesirable cents in it. I did collect a rolls worth of "crappies" as I call them. Have not decided where to drop them yet!? :D mu ha ha ha! |

I had a bunch of disfigured pennies that were eaten up on the edges with what looked like acid, and some that were bent that I slipped into the center of a zinc roll I took back to the bank, it must've been about 20-25 of them. Whoever opens that roll will be surprised. One penny looked like Cookie Monster had gotten hold of it. |

Could you give me a link to a picture of the worst looking one? I would like to offer it as an avatar here. |
