An important factor affecting the liquidity of our hoards is the ablility to ship large anounts of them cheaply.
I have seen posts where guys say you can ship 2 bags in one of those Priority Flat Rate Boxes. Most of the folks that say this have never shipped large quauntities of pennies. Tmaring challenged me to do it in another thread. I love a challenge. I figured if anybody could do it it would be me. There are 2 considerations.. space and weight. You cannot physically fit 10,000 pennies in there loose.. the box is too small. Anybody that does not believe that has never tried to put 2500 pennies back in a penny box after breaking them out of the rolls. To get more of them in less space you have to roll them. Weight is the other factor. A couple of bags of copper is heavy.. and you need to add packing material to reinforce the box. The max weight for any package at the post office is 70 pounds. I knew it was going to be close. I was afraid I was going to have to open the box and pull out 1 roll just to make weight. 199 rolls just wouldn't do it for me though. I made it! 200 Rolls!
A new Domestic Shipping Record! 69 Pounds, 15.4 Ounces!
Of course this is still an unofficial record until the package is received intact at the other end.
I heard a big crash in the back of the post office. I think they started testing my packaging skills right away.
Don't try this at home. This should only be attempted by penny packing professionals.

Shipping cost works out to:
under 4.5 cents per roll, or .0895 cents per coin. Nice work. |

HCBTT Congrats on the shipment. You are the shipping king. The most I have ever shipped is 60 lbs. You have given me a new goal to shoot for. But you only left 6 tenths of an once for me to work with. With all of us shipping copper and wheat pennies around the United States I keep expecting to hear a news release that the USPS has discontinued the flat rate box. I know my postman kind of rolls his eyes and looks the other way when he sees me come into the post office with my boxes. |

I'd be interested in know what other companies such as UPS, FedEx, DHL, would charge for the same type of shipment. Anyone ever look into those costs before? |

NDFARMER.. I didn't want to leave too much room for anybody to eclipse my record.. LOL. At my main post office they played a cruel joke on me about a year ago or so when they were getting ready to change the postal rates. They told me that the Flat Rate Box was going to be eliminated with the new rates. Then they had a good laugh and told me they were pulling my leg. Back in the day we used to ship a bag of wheat cents out in 2 of the flat rate envelopes that cost $3.20 each. I think those envelopes are $4.60 now. The used to call me Mr. 320 at more than one post office. They said I was talked about frequently at the weekly staff meetings. They even told me I was responsible for the Oakland marketing department of the PO issuing a memo banning the use of tape to reinforce those packages. I once shipped an entire mint sewn bag of 1968-S pennies in one of those $3.20 flat rate envelopes. That was a real challenge.. 33 pounds, 14.6 ounces. I figure the post office came out with these flat rate boxes just for me.. LOL.
Funny thing.. I stopped off at one of the post offices I used to ship the wheat cents out from. It had been 5 years since the last time I had been in that PO. The clerk takes one look at me, turns to the clerk next to her and says "This is the guy we were telling you about" So apparently I am still something of a legend in some post offices. I am surprised they never posted my picture on the post office wall.
When I dropped the package off at the post office the guy said "This is even heavier than your normal ones" Then when he brought out the 3 packages of 7500 coins that I was picking up today he said.. "These are light compared to that other one" After hitting them with the big box today maybe they won't grumble so much about my regular 52 pounders anymore. |

I used to ship UPS back in the old days before the Post office came out with the flat rate envelopes. The cost was a little cheaper than the PO parcel post rate but quite a bit more than the flat rate. It also depended on how much you were shipping. When I used to get orders of 30 or 40 bags of wheat cents shipped to me we got a great deal by using what they called a "hundred weight" shipping option through UPS.
Technically all the shippers would probably balk at shipping pennies if they knew what they were. They have some fine print that says you cannot ship cash or cash equivalents. It is even on the PO flat rate boxes. So if anyone ever asks you what is so heavy that you are shipping you should tell them it is copper discs for jewelry making. |

You cannot physically fit 10,000 pennies in there loose.. the box is too small
I beg to differ, I've been doing it twice a week and the post office lady hates the 68.5-69lb boxes I'm bringing her. You could fit more than 10,000 in there loose but you'd be over the 70lb weight limit. |

Also, I saw someone in the Numismatic News selling 200lb test nesting boxes that go right in the flat rate box. about $1.50 each though. i just wrap the entire outside of the box very tightly in clear shipping tape several times after addressing it. I think I could drop one without it busting. |

Guess I am just using up too much space with my extra reinforcement layer.. LOL. At 70 pounds I want to make the box as sturdy as possible. |

I had one today 69 lbs 14 ounces exactly, I thought i might have you but it was just under.
As for the extra reinforcement, I've found that three Brinks boxes fit perfectly in the bottom of a flat rate box and then if you split another Brinks box in half it'll sit on top those and still be able to close the box but it's very very tight which makes the box very sturdy. I started shipping them that way and rolling my coins for sale instead of selling by weight so I know exactly what I'm sending out that way. |
