I get $5.00 to $10.00 a week from my bank branches. They all know what I'm doing as others are doing it as well. Scowls are what I get. Can't imagine what you box buyers are getting. The tellers all know about pre-82 and the hoarding. The secret is out.

I guess the thoughtwaves haven't reached the tellers in my town. I pick up $250 a week in boxes, and half the time they wonder why on earth I want pennies. The other half don't care. Some are collectors themselves and sympathize.

FRIENDLY TIP:

Pull out the shiny 1958 Wheatie that you carry for just this kind of emergency. Slide it over to the now curious teller and say, cheerfully, "I collect these! I only find about 10 in a whole box."

You don't need to, and don't tell them you are hoarding. Showing them the wheat penny sates their curiosity, makes a friend, then they find it mildly interesting, instead of mildly weird.

Besides, what you do with your money isn't their concern.

Trust the government? Ask an Indian.

I wonder some times if some of the tellers do or not. The more mainstream the news about copper prices becomes the more aware that some of the banks become. Personally it shouldn't matter to them they get paid to do a job. Today at one of my stops the teller told me that I would only be able to get 10.00 per week as some other customer also was purchasing change on a weekly basis. Guess I'll make this my dump bank, maybe he can resort some of my zinc...

So far I have had no problems at all getting pennies to sort. Most tellers don't even ask what I want so many pennies for and if they do I also tell them that I am a coin collector searching for wheat pennies. Which is true I am searching for wheat pennies. I just don't tell them that I also am searching for copper. Actually this works good for bringing back large amounts of pennies because I tell them I may only find 15 or 20 wheats in a 5000 coin bag so I will be bringing just about all these pennies back in a couple of days. And when I do they don't notice that it is all zinc that I am bringing back.

I just picked up $600.00 worth today. I had one bank order me $300.00 worth last week which I picked up today. They even came in bags so I don't need to unwrap all those rolls, and the teller had the 6 bags on a cart and wheeled them out to my car for me after I paid for them. Can't beat service like that. So I told her to put the order in again for next week.

You just have to tell them you would like to purchase pennies, either boxes or bags. If they don't have any on hand then ask if they can order you some in. You may have to start an account at several banks but most offer totally free checking with no minimum balance and service charges.

COPPER - the "poormans" precious metal!!!

SELLING - $100.00 face copper shipped to you for $189.00 machine rolled or bagged - PM me if your interested.

El Dee, great idea about carrying a wheat penny around to show a curious teller!

The credit union, where my husband and I have banked for *years and years* are reluctant to give up teh penneh. I don't understand it. We have a savings account, a money market account, our mortgage, our checking account there, our son has a savings account there . . . *shrug*. So I opened an account at another bank and they will order as many pennies as I like. I sort by hand, though, and can only manage $100 per week.

I've done something similar in looking for nickels here in Canada. I used to carry around one of the old Canadian King George V nickels, say a 1929 or some such, and say that is what I am collecting. More recently, I told the bank manager what I was doing and he was very supportive, saying he would try to hold old coins for me. He also told me that there is at least one other collector going to the same bank, but the other collector would never say what he wanted them for, only that he wanted to "avoid competition". It seemed that the bank manager had no idea about the different metal composition of nickels and their value.

I once told a teller at another branch that they would be a good hedge against a banking failure, but I don't think she took me seriously.

Just ordered $1,250 worth of pennies today, yes 50 boxes.

Should arrive Friday and I'll have to go pick them up.

Expecting the Ryedale to arrive shortly after.

Probably Friday I will open an account at another bank to use to dump the zinc.

Hopefully here in Mississippi we are behind the times and I'll have the chance to sort several 10's of thousands of dollars of pennies or more before things get difficult.

Hopefully.

I had trouble at my credit union today and when I asked why I was told that they don't order change,
the teller and manager said the only change they have is what customers bring in. ( I think that's a tall tale I feel that they probably pay to order change and wont to squeeze out every dime of profit). I asked if they would order and was told no. Guess I'll move my account to the "penny friendly" branch where I have a standing order for pennies. Oh well penny wise dollar foolish.

Just use them as your dump bank.. that way they will have plenty of pennies and you don't have to worry about getting your own back.

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

I went to one of my favorite Korean banks last saturday. I always do good there. This time there was a different crew. Not a word of english amoung the three girls behind the counter. (the illegal alien security guard spoke more english) Any way I fineally made them understand what I wanted. They had $37 in halves. As the girl was counting them she stopped at one and said "silver" then continued counting in Korean.

That was the only english word I heard in that bank.

They do know but most don't care.

Ant.. take your zinc rejects to the CU and offer to swap them after you roll them up. That way they don't have to worry about a penny shortage. Just keep depositing those zincs at the CU.. if they won't sell to you at least you have a good place to dump. This way you don't have to worry about getting your own pennies back at the bank.
