It might be that the Fed isn't doing the sorting. Maybe there are other people sorting the coins and returning them to the fed. You might just be getting what they've turned back in. |

Perhaps, but I find it odd that well over 90% of the coins are 2006. Probably around 96%.

As you know, I'm not into sorting pennies like most of you guys, but I noticed that the pennies I get in change now are about 90% zinc. I hope my penny and nickel donation jar brings in a better return.

Take the day's nickel price and move the decimal point two places to the left (each one is .01 lb):
Today: Nickel = $13.2411 US so one .999ni nickel is worth 13.24 US cents.

and times $13.2411 with the exchange rate of 1.129, we have $14.494 per pound, so each canadian nickel's metal content(.999 Ni) is worth 3 times it's face value
Hong Kong is my origin, each of those nickel(metal content) is now worth over HKD $1.00; |

Yep. Tripple your money immediately with no risk of loss. Not a lot of investment vehicles offfer numbers like that.
Looks like ni's going up even more - it peaked over 13.45 today, before falling back a little. LME stocks are still insanely low, and we're just getting into the pre-christmas season. |

i went to a local coin dealer today; in my last visit, i vaguely remembered he's selling those canadian nickels from around late 1930s to 1967 with the commerative rabbit nickel for about 10 cents each or less if you buy bulk; today i checked, but he is on vacation, but his helper said someone came in the other day to buy all of them the owner was showing up front, i don't know if that same guy had cleared all of his stock or not; i will give it a serious thought if i can buy those nickels for 10 cents each or less |

I'd really like to know where some of the members with their sorting percentages are located. Bermuda and Bahama penny maybe yeldarb is located in Florida. I think each area is going to have much differnt sorting percentages.
For the record, I'm located in Indianapolis.

Alas, I'm too busy with my job, my autistic child, and my in-laws visiting for several weeks to do any penny searching. I do have about $60 face pre-82 pennies that I put away as a teen-ager many years ago. Maybe I'll get some boxes to store away and sort later. Problem with my bank seems to be that when I order by the box, 2 of 2 times I've gotten all new uncirculated coin. I have $100 of 2006 nickels and I had $1000 face of uncirculated 1997 Kennedy halves!
Happy searching to all!

Got a not-so-great box of Canadian nickels today, from the TD in Collingwood. About 1/2 of the rolls (22, to be precise) were hand rolls in a variety of tubes (some cardboard, some plastic) that contained nothing but 2005 steel "victory re-issue" nickels. Very strange - it was as though somebody had got a bunch of mint rolls, opened them up, and then packed them into other random rolls. Anyway, here's the breakdown of what good NI I did find:
250 Older Elizabeth .999 NI 11 Round Young Elizabeth 4 12-sided young elizabeth 2 Round (1940) Goerge Heads ___ 267 /2000 = 13.35 %
or, for the percentage in the rolls that weren't 2005 rolls:
267 /1200 = 22.25%, about average for mixed rolls in ontario.

Imperial Fleet says - I am in Indy too. Stay away from my bank Tourney!
I live in Brownsburg, and bank in Northwest Indy. I have been getting my coins from my credit union who will call me any time an individual turns in coins. I've stopped getting the Brinks boxes as they have been junk recently. The Walmart I get pennies from has been the Brownsburg Walmart. I have been returning my coins at a couple of different Union Federal Bank branches. They hate me there. I definitely don't want to see any of your coins come my way either. |
