Got screwed yesterday....2 Brinks boxes, almost entirely brand new 2006 pennies. I did a quick and hasty sorting of the ones that looked 'dirty' on the edges:
Box #1: 0 Wheats 0 Canadians 3 82's 37 Coppers 2460 Zincs --------------- 1.48% Copper...I am not even counting these in my official figures. The truck must have just come from the mint

Just got this week's Brinks box. Not even worth opening the rolls. Same as ImperialFleet. Probably 20 pennies that are dark on the edges, that might be coppers. All 2006, and not quite clean enough to sell on Ebay. Total waste of effort. May need to find a new source of pennies if this keeps up. The rolls from Walmart are being productive though, averaging over 30% copper and getting about 1 Brinks box a month with very few questions asked. |

Hey, why didn't you guys tell me I'm an A$$hole? I just glanced at Imperial Fleet's post and thought he had said he pulled out 68% copper.
I'm not doing very good myself. $25 box 18% copper. |

So I took a little trip across south central Ontario last weekend, and picked up 5 $100 boxes of Canadian nickels, 2 from Kitchener and 3 from Orangeville. 2 boxes are from ScotiaBank branches and 3 are from TDBank branches. Here's the breakdown:
Box 1:
458 Older Elizabeth .999 NI 1 Round George Head 1 12-sided George head 29 Round Young Elizabeths 4 12-sided young Elizabeths ___ 493 = 24.65%
Box 2:
459 Older Elizabeth .999 NI 21 Round Young Elizabeths 5 12-sided young Elizabeths ___ 485 = 24.25%
Box 3:
478 Older Elizabeth .999 NI 31 Round Young Elizabeths 13 12-sided young elizabeths 1 Round George head ___ 523 = 26.15%
Note: Also: 1 steel war nickel. 2 of the rolls in this bank were all pure NI rolls coins.
Box 4:
439 Older Elizabeth .999 NI 2 Round George Heads 1 12-sided George Head 5 12-sided young Elizabeths 13 Round young Elizabeths ___ 460 = 23.00%
Box 5:
390 Older Elizabeth .999 NI 5 12-sided young elizabeths 18 Round young elizabeths 2 Round George Heads ___ 415 = 20.75%
________________________ ____TOTALS______________ ________________________
2224 Older Elizabeth .999 NI 112 Round Young Elizabeths 32 12-sided young elizabeths 6 Round George heads 2 12-sided george heads ____ 2376 /10,000 = 23.76% |

Have you noticed differences in percentages based on where you buy? Such as, buying from a chain bank as opposed to buying from a bank in a store (like a grocery store)? |

In a word, no. Average of 23% across the board, but I am more likely to find rolls full rolls of pure nickel in bank boxes than I am with counter rolls from WalMart, Loblaws, etc. |

Just got 10 rolls from Walmart. They are the clear plastic rolls and every one of them is pure 2006. Not good enogh to sell on Ebay. Now I don't know where to get my coins. This is becoming serious. I think Walmart must be getting their clear plastic rolls from Brinks too, and any paper rolled ones from customers. I may have to do some investigative work on the Walmart sourcing. |

How do you buy coins from Wal Mart any way? Do they got a bank at your store or do you go to the office. I never tried but I doubt the Wal Mart store would be willing to sell me coins.

I ususally ask for $10 in nickels from the walmar courtesy desk. They usually tell me no, but sometimes, if there's someone with the key to the cash room there, they do it. |

I continue to sort $ 50.00 bags and average 30.5 % Cu. Our data coudn't match more perfectly. I keep wondering when the % will drop again. |

I used to ask for them at the custommer service desk, but they now refer me to the head cashier, who has a cash draw of change and bills for servicing all the cashier needs before you get to the checkouts in the middle. I usually get 10 rolls but have gotten as many as 20. They have never refused me and I have done this at 3 different Walmart's around town. |

If I have $20,000 of sorted pennies sitting around, how could I sell them for the copper content? I haven't seen that any of you guys are actually selling the coins that you sort. |

The copper coins can be sold to scrap yards for the copper content. Copper content is 95% in US pre 82 pennies, which could be sold as #2 Scrap Copper $2.67/lb or at worst Light Scrap Copper $2.31/lb. Some scrap yards won't take the pennies. I feel like the price of copper will continue to increase and my copper pennies will be worth even more. I have not pursued selling the pennies. As the price increases, I feel more scrap metal dealers will buy the pennies. Same thing happened when silver went through the roof. |

Hi Srhite, welcome.
You could also try selling to other copper cent folks on ebay, or on this forum.
Copper cent hoarding is still relatively underground. Give it time and I believe they will be trading the same way pre-1965 silver coins do today.

Last week I bought 2 more Brinks boxes, both were nearly all Zinc AGAIN! That is 4 in a row . Today I bought 1 more Brinks box and when I cracked it open it appears to be a normal box with tons of Copper (finally!). I always buy from the same bank branch since I have a deal with the head teller. This resets my personal hoarding parameters counter to zero. I am curious if these 4 horrible boxes had something to do with a regional-penny-refresh-schedule from the US Mint? I mean, maybe they push new coinage out on a schedule by region, and my region happened to be during July? The world may never know
Box #1 from last week: 1 Wheat 0 Canadians 10 '82's 51 Coppers 2,438 Zincs ------------------- 2.04% Copper.
