some of them have a moon shape die clash at the bottom of the chimney, but above the roof, it's the king's ear on the obverse; if you found other nickels with king george on the obverse, remember to look for any die clashes; they are far more frequent than the queen's nickels

Hey guys, forum newbie here. I've been in to silver and gold for a while and doing well at it and just started with pre-82 pennies (thanks to this site), but now I'm also interested in nickels. Does anyone have a guide for year vs metal content? Normally I can Google the daylights out of something but I haven't found anything on this. Anyone have any tips for a n00b?
Thanks!

Welcome! Most of the crew are gold and silver bugs too. The standard U.S. nickels is 75% copper 25% nickel. Pre 82 pennies are 95% copper 5% zinc. 82 (transition year) and after are 95% zinc and 5% copper plate/ I think I got that right. Have you been to You must be logged in to see this link. yet? If that doesn't answer your questions I'll post more.

Thanks Ardent Listener! Nickels:1946-2006 are what I was looking for!
Checked that page and still trying to find what year nickel are 100% nickel. I put the question before you all since you're vets compared to me. :-)
Silver is huge with me right now. I have some gold but try to avoid it overall as a short term investment since the gain isn't as big as silver. I' also converting my "keeper" bullion (meaning 50% of the silver I buy I keep while the other 50% is for short term investments) over to pre-65 coinage. It all goes toward my little theory which I will post in the proper thread soon.

Hooli,
I don't think any U.S. nickels are 100% nickel. Some of the old Canadian nickels are 95% though.

Got 10 rolls of pennies at Walmart this weekend. Most of them were paper wrapped vs. plastic like I see in my Brinks boxes.
160 coppers 32% 3 wheat 1 old Canadian 1 dime
Overall pretty good. I typically see more productive numbers in the paper rolls vs. the plastic rolls. |

I keep wondering when I'll start seeing a drop in those numbers, but so far it hasn't happened. Centavito

I buy & sell mixed and sorted bags in midwest. Chicago area started at 100 % in '81 and is now approximately 31 % CU. The % has declined noticeably during past year.

Hi Coppersmith, welcome aboard!
I have noticed the percentage of pre-82 coins dropping in my area lately as well.
I hope it isn't our fault...I have received more than one private message on this site saying that this forum has caused people to become obsessed with sorting pennies.

It's not just those of us on the forum. I noticed the clerk in Zellers checking the pennies she gave me in change the other day, ensuring that she only gave me zincs. |

2 rolls canadian nickels today. 1 from walmart, one from A&P. Both "coinage distribution inc." machine rolls.
20 .999ni Older Elizabeths 1 Young Elizabeth __ 21 = 26.25%
Ratios don't seem to be dropping. That's a good thing. |

10 rolls from Walmart (4 plastic rolls 6 paper).
151 Coppers 30.2% 6 Wheat 0 Canadians 1 Dime
I tend to get much better percentages of coppers from the paper rolled than I do the plastic. |

I sorted $ 100.00 face cents including '82's. As has been typical this year, found 30.5 % Cu, 69.5 % Zn. Our % couldn't be closer considering I count '82's. Did you see the post from Centavito stating he finds only 24 % in D.C. area, more in West Virginia ? I am in Chicago area, how about you ? Would like to keep track of any serious diversions from 30.5 % and try to determine why. |

Has anyone made or seen a graph or chart which tracks the % Cu cents circulating since '82 ? I have saved a lot of data but have several years missing. Know if the Mint has figures ? |

If you're publishing data re % Cu, I think your general location would be extremely helpful, especially in light of rumors of mass Cu removal by the Feds. I keep averaging 30.5 % in the Chicago area.
