Because:
1. Canadian pennies contained a higher percentage of copper in them for a longer period than the U.S. making them a good find for copper content AND 2. Many members on this board live in Canada.

Cashed in all those crap 2006 steel nickel mint rolls at Scotia and picked up another $100 box of nickels from TD. I got machine rolled "Coinage Distribution Inc." rolls. Also, I chatted up the cute teller, who was quite interested in coin collecting.
Here's what I found among the 2000 coins:
456 Pre-81, post-64 Old Elizabeths 27 Round Young Elizabeths 20 12-sided Young Elizabeths 3 George Head nickels (including a sudbruy nickel) 1 rabit '67 nickel ___ 507 .999 Ni Nickels, or 25.35%
Also:
969 75/25 CuNi nickels (American or 82-99 Canadian) = 48.45%
Total "real money" percentage: 73.8%
I also found one weird aluminum coin that was the same size as the nickels but has a "10" and a bunch of arabic on it.

Don't you mean 50 rolls ($25) in a Brinks box? Hate to correct you, but I assume you meant 50 and not 25. Unless of course Brinks boxes are different in your area.

So I took a little trip down to the TD bank today, and I'm quite happy I did. I got one $100 canadian nickels box, and got to talk coin collecting with the cute teller (although I noticed today that she's wearing a wedding band - damnit!) Anyway, this is by far the best box I've ever bought. An unmarked cardboard box, this time with no teller's stamp. All obviously hand rolled (about 12 rolls were overfull by 4 or 5 nickels each) and obviously from a few years ago, as the following percentages illustrate:
2000 Coins
769 Old elizabeth .999ni nickels 26 Round young elizabeths 7 12-sided young elizabeths 2 George head ____ 804 = 40.2% PURE NICKEL!!!
Plus
1148 82-99 75/25 CuNi
= 57.4% Cupronickel coins (only 1 american - another sure sign of older rolls)
Total real money: 97.6%!!!!!
I also found 6 dimes in the box, all of them in the overstuffed rolls. Must have been someone rolling while drunk ;)
Anyway, I'm so glad I decided to get up and hit the bank instead of sleeping in today. |

Third and final box from last week:
12 wheats (1 roll had 3 wheats) 10 Canadians 104 '82's 754 Coppers 1620 Zincs --------- 30.16% Copper.
I'll be picking up 2 more boxes on Monday morning

Ballcopper: I'm in collingwood, about 2 hours north of toronto, on the shores of georgian bay. It's a big retirement community, so I guess that helps with the higher percentage of old coins. However, the most bountiful rolls I'm getting have the words "Wrapped By/Emballeur par: Roll-X Calgary" on them. |

CN, thanks for your information :)
Vancouver has a lot of retirees too, but i just don't have that kind of percentages :(
i gone through 2 boxes of nickels this week:
first box : 382 out of 2000 5-cent pieces are pure nickel second box: 378 out of 2000 5-cent pieces are pure nickel
so, total is 760/4000=19%

Yeah, but vancouver is a big city with all sorts of different people and many many businesses. I imagine percentages in Toronto would be the same (we'll see - I have a friend bringing me two boxes of nickels from Toronto next weekend) whereas Collingwood is still a "town" and has a very large (60%+) retiree population |

Another $100 box of Canadian nickels from TD. Coinage distribution inc. box. 10 rolls hand-rolled and 40 machine rolls. 1 of the hand rolls was Calgary roll-x, 7 clear plastic snap rolls, 2 cardboard rolls:
549 Older elizabeth .999ni 24 Round young elizabeths 7 12-sided young elizabeths 2 George heads 4 Rabbit nickels ____ 586 = 29.3% Still quite good.
1002 72/25 CuNi ncikels =50.1%
Total real money percentage: 79.4%
Also found:
1997 singapore 20ct coin
1 Unknown 20 something coin with dancers on the front, a lion's head on the back and text in some language half-way between cyrilic and arabic.

through 100 rolls of pennies:
US pennies : 318 <=81'______: 704 (2175 grams) 82'-96'____: 1396 (3490 grams)
(704+1396)/(5000)=42% (2175+3490)/(454)X(98%)=12.23 pounds
note: i average about 1 dime in every 4 rolls,

Quick question, does anyone find dimes in the brinks box rolls? If not what types of rolls do you find the dimes in and what types of banks give them out. |

i got them from royal bank in vancouver, the plastic bag says it's been "PACKAGED BY ARMOURED CAR SERVICE INC."
the rolls are probably machine sorted, with dimes incorrectly sorted in there somehow; the max i got is 2 in a roll

I typically find at least one dime per $25 Brinks box of pennies. My last box had 2 dimes.

Well, I have to get a new alternater on my car, so I can't afford any more boxes this week, but I did ask for a roll of nickels in my change at the supermarket (Loblaws) today. One coinage distribution inc. machine roll. Here's the breakdown:
7 pre-81 .999ni 17.5%
22 82-99 75/25 CuNi 55%
11 post-2000 steel nickels 27.5%

CN, i think you are obssessed, both with nickel hoarding, and reporting your stat in here, which i think is a good thing; let's wait for a "USA_Nickle" to match you, and better still anyone from other countries too
ps, those 99' canadian nickels with a "P" mint mark are actually .945 steel, .035 copper(electroplated), and .02 nickel(electroplated), only those 99' nickels without the "P"s that you should be horading, sorry to point out this late; i find this info. in my 60th edition of charlton coin catalogue, printed 2005
