20 rolls today.....

7 wheat
3 canadian
238 copper

I was going over some old posts and seen this one from

ardent listener.......Not to get off-topic here, but that is the beauty of base metals in the form of coins because of their face value and the goverment hallmark of purity.. If someone wants to speculate that the price of base metals are going to go up,

As i sit and think about that i wonder how many people that would hoard 90% silver coins when the government made the switch to clad ? Its almost the same with all of us as we see the value of the base metal coins and with the knowledge of that are taking the opportunity to hoard up as many as possible.

So yes Ardent Listener i would say base metals are going to go up way up and would also venture to say that silver will be at 18.00 to 23.00 and copper will be at todays silver price.

Somebody once told me that silver is the poor mans gold.
Maybe we will see a time when copper will be the poor mans silver?

OPINIONS ?

Sorry so long !

i would be happy if one day we can talk about copper and nickel in turns of ounces instead of pounds

"Jim (my coin dealer), can you give me 5 ounces of nickels please?"

I've been sorting my change for a while now, but I've never gone out and gotten pennies specifically to sort them. Inspired by the nutjobs on this forum (and when I say that, it's almost always a compliment :P ), I picked up a few to sort in my spare time. Didn't take nearly as long as I thought it would, so I'll hit the bank again next week and get some more for later.

Out of 1000 sorted, I had about 260 pre-82s including 3 wheats, and 30 or so 1982s to be sorted by weight later. All of the 1982s sounded like copper, though (using the "flip and listen" technique).

Looking at this thread, that seems like an above-average percentage of coppers, which is encouraging.

I'm still deciding what to do with my zincs....

You are right, they are idiots.

The trouble with some of the boobus-Americans on that site (the digg.com site) is the fact they don’t realize that the price of zinc and copper have been increasing over the years, and, with inflation, will keep increasing in the years to come. Who is to say that the government won’t someday change the metal content of pennies again to a cheaper metal?

Tell the average American (or to be more accurate, below average American) that a penny is worth more than a penny and the government is overpaying to produce pennies, then he or she will either shrug in indifference or get mad and say ”that’s the stupid government for you”, and walk away.
Most wouldn’t even consider hoarding pennies to resell someday, much the same way most didn’t think to try to save dimes, quarters and halves when they were silver and available at face value.
Most folks probably wonder why some can make money while they can't.

a mint medallion is a coin included in every uncirculated coin set that mean someone had to cut open a uncirculated mint set. it has no face value but is very rarely there found in circulation.

I went to the bank today and got 16 rolls of pennies..

Total: 800
post-1982: 509
1982 (unsorted): 33
pre-1982: 257 (32.125%)

Also got one 1987 Canadian penny.

Found only one wheat, but the entire operation was made worthwhile by this beautiful 1900 Indian Head penny that I nearly cried when I saw.

I also got 5 rolls of nickels that I just put in my nickel jar... not sure if I should bother going through them.. anything special to look for in nickels??

Oh, but no purple pennies. :P

So this count is for 20 rolls Hand rolled from TD bank collingwlld, plus 1 machine roll from the last box I sorted that I missed. Which means that the percentage for my last box is slightly off, if anyone cares.

Numbers:

183 Older Elizabeth .999NI
8 rye
7 12s ye
1 1947 ML!
___
199 / 840 = 23.69%

Plus: 2 dimes, one with hash on it.

A 1925 wheat in good condition 15 cents.
The better the condition the better the price

You made at least 14 cents finding it.

I got bored tonight, so I went back though my posts to this topic and figured out the following running totals:

So far I have sorted through 89,320 rolled Canadian nickels. That's 2,233 rolls, or $4466 face value.

I've found and hoarded 22,367 .999NI pre-82 nickels, for a total average of 25.04% That's $CAN 1118.35 face value.

Total weight of nickel hoarded = 223.67 lb. Friday's closing price was $US 15.7873/lb, which gives the hoard a value of $US 3531.15 or, at friday's exchange rate, $CAN 3,974.49.

Since I paid face value for the nickels, my profit thus far is $CAN 2856.14, or a 255% return on investment - and that's just at nickel's price today - hands up who thinks the price of has reached its permanent peak? Also, that doesn't include the many nickels I've found that also have a numismatic value above their melt.

To put it into perspective, I make $10/hour at work. I'd have to work 285 extra hours, or about forty full work days, to earn that money in the store. And sorting still doesn't feel like "work" - I look forward to it.

This is so awesome. Thanks soooooo much the forum and mods for turing me on to this. Way to go, guys.

Searched through 20 rolls of pennies this evening. Out of 1000 coins I found 186 pre-1982 bronze cents (one of which was a 1957 D wheat in XF condition). This was a good set of rolls for here in Southern California ... I usually average between 15%-17%. Tonight I was consistently finding 8-10 per roll, where I mostly find 5-7 per roll and a couple with 10-13 for an average of 150-170 per 1000. As for wheats, I typically find 1-2 per 1000 pennies. Happy Hoarding!!

Yes, this is a piece from a US Mint set. Mint sets have one example of all coins made that year, Philadelphia, and Denver. In some Mint sets they include this token, the "P" you found was from the Philadelphia set. When folks, for whatever reason, disassemble the mint sets to get uncirculated coins of a particular date and mint mark, they're often left with the "P" and "D" tokens. I've seen a few of these at coin shows. I don't remember how much they go for, but probably not more than $1 - $2, probably more like $0.25.

Hi!

I am realatively new to this. I have a goal to have an hundred dollars of 1981 and older pennies. I have been going to my local bank and getting the boxes, bags and whatever they have. They will let me buy a hundred dollars worth at a time, but I am only getting ten to fifteen dollars of the older coins. I have only found a dozen of so wheat pennies, a few foriegn coins, not to mention a few Canadian pennies. I have really enjoyed this.

One time a bought all the half dollars the bank had, two hundred dollars worth, in this I found six fourty percent silvers.

I buy the coins from my local bank, but I take them to the city where I have an account at a bank that has a counter that I can turn them in at. It works really well to count near an hundred dollars worth of pennies or hald dollars.

This is just fun and besides it does't cost a lot, at least I still have the same amount of money at the end. Copper will always be valued in relation to silver.

Eventually I will find the regular ratio of silver to gold to copper, if any one has it please let me know.

Thanks, this really is fun.

Heads up.
It seems that buying rolls is popular with the coin collecting crowd too.
You must be logged in to see this link.

Of course, they are looking for silver and wheats, not pre 82’s and nickel. Still, competition is competition.

Maybe this is why it is getting harder and harder to find pre 82’s. The collectors are starting to catch on to the price of copper and are starting to hoard pennies.

In one of their posts, they refer to checking the reject tray in Coinstar machines to pick up the odd coins that folks left behind, what with some people being too lazy or stupid to check the tray. Wouldn’t be a bad idea for us to do the same. You never can tell what you can find unless you look. Looking under the Coinstar machine won’t hurt either.

Hi everyone,

I've been saving pre-1982 pennies for a few years now, and lately I've started saving all pennies, but I've never actually gotten rolls of pennies for hoarding purposes until recently. Today I picked up $15 dollars worth of pennies, I'll sort some of them later and post the results.

Other than wheat pennies, are there any cents I should be looking for?

I got my first box of pennies on October 24th. Here's what I got...

1657 Zinc
104 1982 (not sorted)
719 Copper (including 12 wheat)
8 foreign coins (7 Canada, 1 Panama)

28.76% Copper

I got another box today, but it'll be a while before I post my results.

Sorted 500 pennies:

26 1982 (not sorted)
1 wheat
1 canadian
1 dime!
1 unreadable
152 pre-1982

30.4% copper

The rest were zinc. I was surprised to get a dime since these appeared to be machine-rolled (plastic casing).

This is kinda interesting, just to see what you get.
