weight of box and contents- 57 lbs.
weight of box empty- 1.5 lbs.
weight of pennies- 55.5 lbs.
paid $30.00 for box.

Person selling box said they belonged to his father and had been sitting in his closet since 1990. He said he didnt know how much was in there and that he was too embarassed to take to bank.

After sorting:

pre1982- about 29 lbs.
post1982- about 26 lbs.
pre1996 canadian cent- less than 100 coins
and some misc. tokens

Ardent: Maybe a couple of bucks for the really really nice ones. Most tend to get at least one spot of rust developing on them. They are my favourite nickels, though, so I'm always happy to find them. They make such a neat sound when you jingle a bunch of them together.

Two rolls of pennies ($1, machine-rolled?):

79 zincs (1982-2006)
21 coppers (1960-1980)
2 wheats (1940, 1950-D)
0 Canadian
1 dime
-------------------------
103 coins worth $1.12 at face ($0.12 profit!)
21 / 102 = 20.6% copper

Do machines miss on the quantity like this? Or did a lazy handroller let a dime slip on by?

75 pennies from two months of accomeulated small change:

53 zincs (1983-2006)
21 coppers (1966-1982)
1 wheat (1945)
------------------------
21 / 75 = 28.0% copper

Running Total:
----------------------
132 zincs (1982-2006)
42 coppers (1960-1982)
3 wheats (1940-1950)
1 dime (2004)

42 / 177 = 23.7% copper!

At my workplace there is a charity drive going on we call “change for the better”. We put in small change in jars to donate to the American Cancer Society to help find treatments for cancer.
As the drive is winding down, I asked the girl who had the jar if I could exchange bills for coins instead of her taking the coins to coinstar and she agreed.
I put in $40 for $35.03 in pennies and nickels.
Penny total $29.03
Copper cents $6.59
Zinc cents $21.50
Copper 82’s $0.56
Zinc 82’s $0.19
Copper Canadian $.006
Zinc Canadian $0.01
Wheat cents $0.12
One beat up wheat dated 1918
looked like it fought World War I, and lost.

4 rolls of pennies today:

162 zincs (1982-2006)
39 coppers (1960-1982)
----------------------
39 / 201 = 19.4% copper

Also, 4 rolls of nickels yielded a single keeper... a 1946 Jeff. Four rolls of dimes gave me nothing of interest.

Running Total:
----------------------
294 zincs (1982-2006)
81 coppers (1960-1982)
3 wheats (1940-1950)
1 dime (2004)

42 / 378 = 21.4% copper

I box mixed Canadian Nickels: 1 CDI machine roll, 2 Machine rolls of a type I've never seen before, printed with

"HALIBURTON & WHITE
(416) 259-9206
(514) 748-6554"

The other 47 rolls were hand rolled. Every roll had some pure nickel in it. From TD Collingwood.

I didn't want to post a new topic about this but the copper cent is below 200% now.

1909-1982 Cent (95% copper) * $0.01 $0.0199206 199.20%
1946-2007 Nickel $0.05 $0.0674267 134.85%
1982-2007 Cent (97.5% zinc) * $0.01 $0.0109977 109.97%

Concerning the drop in copper prices,
we can do one of two things:
Mourn the decline in the melt value of the copper penny
or
Take comfort in the fact that the melt value of a copper penny is more than its face value.

Demand for copper is not going away, China and India and much of Asia still needs copper.
Just hold your breath and hang on, since all metals seem to be declining a bit for the end of the year.
