Just to clarify any sale that was made to my local scrapyard was sold as-is, where is, no questions asked--however it was always implied that the coins were sold for purposes other than to melt them. It is hinted by both myself and the buyer that these would be just held onto---however these scrapyards around here are wise to the notion of the value in metal coins[they can always be melted but only when absolutely necessary]so even though they were sold at a market price for copper, my end of the arrangements have always been selling them for a numismatic purpose[such as saving them for their children or whatever.] |

And for percentages---Late in 2005 I, like normal picked up a box of lincoln cents at my local bank on my way to work. Upon opening the box(brinks) I noticed a large number of wheat cents on the top end of many of the rolls. Believe it or not just about the entire 2500 were all wheat cents. After noticing that the first ten rolls opened contained 40-50 wheats per roll I closed my store and went back to the bank and bought two more boxes-which those turned out to be normal average of 30% copper. So the first box must of been a true rarity-somebody must of cashed in a large cent hoard for face value. Most of the cents were common dates with only a few that averaged out at over $5.00 in value; but most all were early dates 1936 and earlier. My total intake was about 2000 copper cents, 1900 of which were wheats, and 500 being zinc. I dont like braggers but I had to share this story--it is nice to have a place to tell/talk about this stuff because most people think im nuts when I talk about hoarding pennies. |

Wow! That's a great find. The best bank box find I had was a whole roll of canadian steel war nickels - these usually wore out very fast, because they weren't made of nickel at all. The whole roll was circulated but with many examples still in VF/NM |

through 70 rolls of nickels, 468/2800 = 16.7%
i.e., for every 600 dollars worth of nickels that's being sorted, we get 100 dollars worth of pure nickel 5-cent pieces back |

Bought 20 rolls today
10 rolls were obviously brought in by a customer the ends were taped shut and they were old wrappers---all ten were all pre-1981 (they looked like they rolled up years ago and had been sitting around awhile- believe it or not no wheats in any of those rolls, but there was a good amount of GEM BU 60's and 70's dates.
The other 10 rolls were nothing special as of right now I have searched 7 of 10 with only a mere 44 copper cents, 2 of which are wheats, all the rest are zincs.

I continue to sort Cu from Zn and find 30.50 % Cu. This confirms what you are finding. I think it would be useful if we note our locations (mine is Chicago suburb) in order to look for early trends or confirmation that the % Cu is less near Washington D.C., etc. Thanks for your dedication and detail.

I bought a $25.00 box of pennies today and sorted out exactly 30% 1981 and older. I do not save the 1982s. I also got 9 wheats.

Not to get off-topic here, but that is the beauty of base metals in the form of coins because of their face value and the goverment hallmark of purity.. If someone wants to speculate that the price of base metals are going to go up, coins present a lot of advantages over scape metals alone. Let me put it this way, if you have a ton of copper (bronze) pennies and a ton of scrap bronze which one would you hold onto longer?

Copper penny percentages 4 rolls 200 cents 50 pre 1982 1 wheat 7 copper 1982 58 copper total 29% total copper. Nice! Also picked up a few rolls of nickels, best finds , one 1940 Denver, one 1958 Denver, one 1963 , looks like it came out of the mint last week. I think I will stick with this new bank for coin hoarding. |

Ardent,
It's also good because the scrapyard will know what they're getting, as opposed to just getting a heap of who-knows-what from someone. If course, there could be some zinc's mixed in, but if it comes to the point where scrapyards are buying pennies, I'm sure they'll have some kind of high-speed sorting machine.
One box from Titan Armored Car Courier:
2,500 pennies: 851 copper (34.0%) (including wheats, 82's, and canadian copper)
6 wheats
100 1982's: 72 copper (72.0%)
1 Bahamas starfish penny (zinc) |

One sealed Brinks box = 2500
752 bronze (copper) cents 21 wheat cents 16 canadian (1 of which was a King George) 85 1982s 1 Very strange copper penny size coin with uncirculated printed across the top, a large P in the middle, and Philadelphia across the bottom. On the other side it has Treasury across its top, the seal of the Treasury in its middle, and United States of America. ?????? It was worth the sort just to find this little gem, though I don't know its value if any.
The rest were zincers.
