I don't know how many members of this forum go to coin shows, but if your interested in coins at all, you really should go to some. However, I know that so many are living in areas where a coin show is not to accessable or any at all. For some reason in the Illinois area there are coin shows almost every weekend. If your in this area just go to Google or yahoo and type in coin shows. I go to almost all of them. See you there if you go.

Great post Carl! I have been to a couple of shows in your area.. 1 in 1991 and 1 in 1999. Had a great time at them. I go to shows all the time and encourage others to attend. You never know what you might find at a show.. whether it is a small local club show or a big National event.

My area has one every Easter and I really look forward to taking the kids.

Awake, O kings of the earth! Come ye, O, come ye, with your gold and your silver, to the help of my people, to the house of the daughters of Zion, to the help of the people of the God of this Land even Jesus Christ.

Coin shows are a great way to educate yourself as to market trends, grading tips and everything else related to the hobby. For every snarly dealer, there are 5 nice ones, so don't get discouraged if one doesn't care to answer questions. I'm both a collector and a copper hoarder. Each has their own specific language to some degree. Most of the shows I attend have free copies of numismatic publications (Coin World, Numismatic News, etc.) and those are handy to get a feel for some of the inner workings of the hobby. Would most of the coin dealers know what a Ryedale is? Doubtful.

Sooner or later we find a few gems among the coppers and zinkers we find and want to know the true value of these treasures. Get to know a local coin dealer. I've never regretted it.

Here in Wisconsin, we have some of the highest property and gasoline taxes in the US. We're squeezed so much, I have to make my daughter wear penny boxes for shoes. At least she has an endless supply.

I both buy and sell at the coin shows. I also do the same at coin club meetings. If you can find a coin club that meets near you it can be a lot of fun.

I really dont know. In one town, there is a antique shop where I bought a steel penny for 26 cents. but, for everything else, they're a litttle high.

Do a google search for the ANA (American Numismatic Association) They have a place on their site that lists all the local clubs time and place of meetings. Be sure to verify once you find one.. not sure how often they update their list.

So do you consider that to be low for the steel if everything else was high?
How many would you like, and I'll even round it down to $.20 for ya.

I noticed a coin show in my area two Friday's ago. I got pretty excited because they come around here few and far between. After a close look at the ad it stated that they were looking to just BUY coins. It was the first time I'd seen something like this advertised as a coin show. Has anyone ever seen anything similar to this?

Hopefully some of the veteran's can post some hints for the other members about how to get the most out of a coin show. Going to your first one can sometimes be a bit overwhelming. It pays to be be prepared.

Crash.. that is not a real coin show.. that is somebody paying advertising to try to clean out an area. I have seen it for both coins and antiques. These are definately not the place you want to go to get top dollar for your extra coins.

Look for a show sponsored by a coin club. Those are usually best. But there are also Larger commercial shows that are quite good too. If you can attend a National show or a large regional show in your area it is truly quite an experience. I have been to them all over the country.

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

Go there and hand out a card with your name on it.Those people that do that rape people and only give whatever they are paying face for the coin whether it is a 21 morgan or a 93-s.WD taught me this and the next time I see one I'm going to stand out front until I get shooed away.
When you see them enter tell them you will give them XXX for the coins they have.Tell them to go inside and if your offer is better tell them to say you'll have to think it over then come out and sell them to you.If it's in a motel/hotel,spend the $50 to get a room so they can't kick you off the property.May even get more coins they have at home and didn't bring(wheats, indians, nickels)

Crash,
Derek is correct. My mentor went to one of those events. Here's how they work they take out full page ad offering to buy gold, silver, pocket watches etc. They claim to pay top dollar. When you arrive there they low ball you with a sad offer. They are like pironah praying on the old and ignorant. My mentor took in a bag of things some silver dollars, a Carson city and they offered him ten dollars each including the CC which was worth a couple hundred. Silver was twenty. They also tried it with a watch he had. The watch was also worth 3 to 4 times what they offered. My Advice stay away. Derek has a good idea. Wait outside and catch them going in talk with them before they sell. Also bring lots of cash and someone to watch your back if you try this.

If your looking for possible coin shows in or near your area you may just hit the Google search and type in coin shows and your state. Also, if you search some coin web sites they run a contiuous list of coin shows but many are biased as to which ones they will list. For example the PCGS web site has a listing of most coin shows. So does that coin magazine Coin World. Some dealers list coin shows they attend themselves as a means of promoting themselves. Example is jmscoins.com on the far left side of his web site. Also, if you go to You must be logged in to see this link. and enter the coin forum there is also a continuous running of coin shows. If you really want to go you have to do a little searching for where they are, when they are, hours, etc. But well worth it. Same for coin clubs. And remember if your in a state that may not have any and you live near a border of another state, try that one also.
Now here are my suggestions as to going to a coin show based on going to them for many, many, many years.
1. Do not go to a coin show with the intent of buying a certain coin for a certain price. Go open minded.
2. Attempt to not pay the original asking price of any coin. Remember a coin show is basically a flea market for coins and haggling of prices is not only acceptable, but expected. In other words most dealers have raised prices more than normal expecting you to chew them down so you end up paying what they wanted anyway.
3. Always, always walk through the entire place prior to making any purchase. If you see a coin at table 1 for a dollar you may find it also at table 20 for less. Naturally sometimes you miss a great deal doing that.
4. Attempt to talk to all the dealers as if you've known them all your life. Remember that a dealer is a person and may not remember all thier previous customers so if you act as if you've been buying from them for a hundred years, you may get a better deal.
5. You can both buy and sell at a coin show but also note the dealers there are usually professionals and know what bottom line is for a coin and they have to make a profit so that is what you may be offered.
6. Try to make friends with other coin collectors. Never know what they know, who they know, so they may be able to help you more than a dealer with some coins.
7. If possible do NOT take a check book or credit/debit card. Many reasons. For one thing you may purchase more than you can afford. You may buy items without thinking since it is not money, only paper of plastic. Also, one more thing to worry about loosing. Not all coin shows contain the most honest people on Earth.
8. When leaving a coin show if you think someone may be following, go back inside and look at something. Then go out again. If that person also does that do it several times so they get the hint you know.
9. You probably will be paying to much attention to coins to notice but if you spot someone paying more attention to buyers than the coins, it may be a security guard but then again, you never know.
10. If you do bring a credit card or check, watch carefully if using them as to who may be standing over your shoulder. If someone attempts to do that, walk away.
11. If your wearing jeans or pants keep all wallets or cash in the front pockets. Really hard to pick pocket there.
12. Prior to going to a coin show, try to find the location of a police station. When leaving a coin show you may, just for the sake of being safe, not sorry, drive past that police station. If you should suspect your being followed, just stop and ask a cop for directions.
13. Back to the coin show. If you get there early you may find more of a selection but the prices may be higher. the dealers hope that a large amount of buyers will show up. If you go late, the selection may be thin but the dealers are getting edgy as to how many more sales they can make so the prices should be lower.
14. And the most important thing about a coin show. HAVE FUN. ENJOY THE HOBBY.

Carl

Cerulean, not sure who wrote that but so much depends on where that person went to a show. Or even went to many shows. I would disagree with item 2 for example. Don't focus on 2 series, go with an open mind. If you focus on just two series you could miss coins you would later say why didn't I look for this or that. No, better to go with an open mind.
Item 3. It is really amazing that many times offensive and/or rude dealers have the best deals.
Items 6. Not true at all. Maybe where that writter went but at many shows I've been to some dealers will talk your head off given the chance. Many dealers are there to just get to know people, have fun, are retired and just want to enjoy life so they talk, talk, talk. Some bring a relative to handles buisness so they can socialize. I've found at some shows it is difficult to get away from a long winded dealer. AND if you have anything in common with some dealers they can keep you there forever it feels like.
8. As I said selling at a coin show for a person that is not a dealer is difficult and not the best place for such private sales. Some are occationally doing OK but later find they could do better on ebay or other internet places.

Never been to a coin show myself but it sounds like a lot of fun. Carl, your points on looking out for sketchy characters following you around make a lot of sense, that hadn't really occurred to me before. Anyone got stories of that sort of thing happening?

As to people following or attempting to follow you it happens all the time in some areas. I'm in Illinois and crime around here is rather common. We've had numersous complaints about people being robbed coming from a coin show. Attempts have been made in the parking lots prior to a show. Many dealers will not unload thier metchandise unless there is a security guard present. My advise about security measures dealing with coin shows is due to the numersous robberies that have taken place in this area. On another coin forum this subject of coin show security was brought up and it was amazing how many people have had such encounters.
If your going to any coin shows in a high crime area or just in an area your not familiar with, I strongly suggest you take all precautions possible. Always better to be safe than sorry.

Luckily I live in a state that allows law-abiding citizens a chance to protect themselves, (CCW permits), unlike Illinois....

Deal

p.s. We are neighbors though, I'm in Missouri.

Live free or die.
Plain and simple.

"If you love wealth more than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, depart from us in peace. We ask not your council or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you. May your chains rest lightly upon you and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen."
