I picked up 8 Brink's boxes at 6 different banks in an 85 mile radius around the Houston area today. All 8 were 100% zinc. Brinks has to be cleaning copper out in this district.

Really? Did they have a date on the boxes?Hopefully this is only a one time thing for ya. I wonder if brinks stock will be going up if they are doubling their money now? Derek |

This week I am going to see if this is true in my area. I never liked Brinks to start with because of low percentages (and the stupid plastic rolls). Loomis is still pretty consistant--up one day and down another. |

TxTim,
Thanks for warning I will be avoiding all brinks banks in houston or Huntsville since I live there. Avoid Amegy Bank and Wells fargo all there coins come from them.
I guess Its time buy from onley Loomis banks or fedboxs from cwi 69 fedboxs. Lets see what Banks use Loomis . Bank of america, Woodforset. Rest I dont know on they buy.
So the thing is what Is Brinks doing will all those 1959 thru 81 copper pennys they pull. Any Ideas . They cant melt it or sell it for scrap since they still have ban right?
Is feds or us mint behind or when will Loomis do it?

I love those fed boxes and hoard up pre 64 silver coins such as rolls of 64 half dollers. Maybe copper will be very expensive such as silver is. |

Not really. There will be so many made and so many saved to be rare.
The first memorials - 1959's - aren't worth more than 2c.

Txtim,
You were talking about geting all 2008 denver pennys from Loomis Banks in houston . They are flooded big time in houston, Conroe. Last monlth I did not short any pennys since I went to maybe 6 or 7 banks around here. I got flooded with 2 boxs worth of brand new 2007 denver dated dec and 6 boxs worth of 2008 denver pennys. Bank of america, Woodforest gave me all new boxs.
Oh well its tough get to old boxs of pennys down here. Good luck on geting Loomis old boxs. I been having trouble buying them also.

Here in Utah my percentages over the last few months have dropped to 5-10%. Since then I have not spent near as much time sorting. I have picked most of mine up from the smaller local banks. I try to find out where the local groups take their change after fund raisers and get those bags. Otherwise I only get zincs. |

Yes, if Brinks boxes are not working for you in your area then go to the smaller locally owned banks. Bring a box or bag with you because they often don't have any. Don't expect them to be able to provide you with more than one box at a time though. They often have the hand rolled returns of older people and young kids.
Time for me to drive buy a local myself again. |

I just started sorting South East of Houston 6 weeks ago. Have gotten solid 20% results from 12 boxes. Just picked up 6 boxes and sampled 5 rolls from each, none had any copper, will assume they are dud boxes. I believe they are brinks. I have not dumped any zinc yet. Must be many people around Houston hoarding, afterall it is the 4th largest city. Just can't believe it turned that quick. What should I do now, quit, or wait till copper gets back in circulation here? |

Buy a cheap scale. I bought one of a few bucks from a traveling tool show that came to town. A box that is 100% zinc would be 13.766 lbs. A box that is 100% copper is 17.125 lbs. A box that is 25% copper is about 14.45 lbs.
Weigh your boxes before you open them. If you get a light box return it unopened or sell it off to Wal Mart or what ever. I would not be wasting time putting a light box through a Ryedale and I sure would not hand sort one!
Don't give up! I recall a story about how a gold miner gave up on his gold mine and the guy who bought it from him found a huge vein of gold again three feet from where he was digging! This is prospecting that we are doing. |

Hey TXCU-
Looks like you, 454ss and I are all seeing the Brinks boxes go from 20% to 0% in the last 2 weeks. This is not coincidence in my opinion. There is no way that hoarders could affect the penny population in such a large city to this extent almost overnight.
I did get some CWI's with copper in them today but I had to ask the tellers to scrounge around the vaults for them. The bulk of the CWI's at the moment are either all new 07's or 08's.
I hope that if this trend continues, the value of copper pennies will rise.
